"When I have listened to my mistakes, I have grown." Hugh Prather

Life happens. Problems happen. And like it or not, mistakes happen.

Everyone makes them. Everyone hates them. And everyone keeps making them.

No matter how careful you are, regardless of how safe you play it, mistakes are going to occur. In fact, the more you work, the more you strive to be your best; the more mistakes you're going to make. It doesn't seem fair, it doesn't seem right; but that's the way it is.

Sometimes mistakes are the direct result of bad decisions you have made. Sometimes they crop up despite your best efforts. But there is one thing you can say for certain about the mistakes you make in life.

You don't want to repeat them.

"It's okay to make mistakes. Mistakes are our teachers - they help us to learn." John Bradshaw

When things go wrong, some people simply shrug their shoulders and go along for the ride. They figure that's just the way things go; that there's nothing they could do about it anyway. What's done is done. And it cannot be undone.

Then there are others who start beating themselves up the moment they make a mistake. They start having second thoughts. They start second guessing themselves. They worry. They wonder. And start wishing they had done things differently. Yet all the worrying, wondering and wishing in the world won't change what has happened.

There is something good - and something bad - you can say about both approaches. While it's good to put bad things behind you, to keep the past in the past - it is also important to learn valuable lessons from your mistakes to insure they're never repeated.

While you cannot completely control mistakes, you can absolutely control what you do AFTER the mistake takes place.

"Every calamity is a spur and valuable hint." Ralph Waldo Emerson

Confucius said, "A man who has committed a mistake and doesn't correct it, is committing another mistake." When you screw things up - which is bound to happen every now and then - take a few moments and retrace your steps. Analyze what went wrong - and why. Determine what you can do better. What you can change. What new steps you need to take.

Then do take them.

Don't dwell on what's gone wrong.
Glean something good from the bad.
Improve your approach, improve your attitude; improve as much as you can.
Then get back into the game.
And start making things right.

"I don't like to pay for the same real estate twice." George Patton

Stop worrying yourself sick about the mistakes you have made. Making a mistake doesn't make you a failure. It doesn't make you wrong. It just makes you human. Never allow the fear of doing something wrong prevent you from doing something right.

Keep on swinging, keep on working; keep on pushing towards your goals. When you make a mistake along the way, fix it. Then forget it.

When Thomas Edison set out to make significant improvements to the incandescent light, he fell flat on his face. But instead of accepting defeat, he kept reworking and refining his ideas until he made things right. When asked about his repeated failures, he didn't bat an eye. He simply replied, "I haven't failed, I've found 10,000 ways that don't work." Albert Einstein, the father of modern physics, said, "A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new." Automotive entrepreneur Henry Ford added his two cents when he said, "Even a mistake may turn out to be the one thing necessary to a worthwhile achievement."

Edison maintained a positive attitude. Einstein preached a positive approach. Ford focused on positive achievement. Through thick and thin (and a ton of setbacks), they passionately pursued a positive objective. And each produced positive results.

Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein and Henry Ford were big time mistake makers by their own admission. Just like you, they made a ton of mistakes. Just like them, you need to get up and get better with each mistake you make. Focus on the positives. Focus on solutions. Focus on turning your mistakes around.

And things will turn out all right.

Power Pointer: Focus on where you are going, not where you've been.
