"If it were not for the bad things that have happened to me, I wouldn't be the person I am today." Wayne Newton

Why do bad things happen to good people?

This question has been asked a billion times by people from every walk of life. Yet its answer remains elusive to this day. No one knows for certain why people who do the right thing and play by the right rules - people most would consider good folks - have bad things occur in their lives.

You do not have to look very far to see people suffering and hurting today. Sometimes you have to look no further than the mirror in front of your face. There is not a one person anywhere who hasn't had to make it through life's toughest times, through life's darkest moments. I know you've been there. Maybe you're there right now. And it's a helpless, almost hopeless feeling to be sure.

"In the final analysis, the questions of why bad things happen to good people transmutes itself into some very different questions, no longer asking why something happened, but asking how we will respond, what we intend to do now that it happened." Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

Why do people hurt you? Why do setbacks occur? Why does hardship and adversity take place in your life? Why do you have to struggle so much... with your health, your finances, your relationships?

Why do these bad things happen to you? Why do you have to suffer? Why do you have to hurt? To be honest, I don't know why. I wish I did, but I don't.

It's just the way it is.

But that doesn't mean you should give in to misfortune when it strikes. While you may never know when or where misfortune may rear its ugly face, you can minimize its impact by conditioning yourself to respond to trouble... in advance. That means conditioning yourself to stand strong in the face of adversity; conditioning yourself to stand tall when your world is crumbling around you. Conditioning yourself to stand up and fight back when trouble crosses your path; to not give an inch.

"If I were to say, 'God, why me?' about the bad things, then I should have said, 'God, why me?' about the good things that happened in my life." Arthur Ashe

Rather than allowing trouble to take you down, condition yourself to instinctively fight back. Condition yourself to take any rotten hand you are dealt and play it for all you are worth. Condition yourself to do whatever it takes to take the bad and make it good. It will take a little work upfront (OK, maybe a lot of work when you're just getting started).

Just condition yourself to stay tough and stick to your guns.

Doesn't sound real easy, does it? Well, it's not. In fact, conditioning yourself to keep going when things are going down the tubes is one of the biggest challenges you will ever have to conquer. To keep fighting when your willpower is waning; to keep pushing when it feels like the weight of the world is pushing against you takes every ounce of your heart and soul. It takes uncompromising commitment. It takes unbending resolve. It takes everything you've got - and a whole lot more.

You will be tempted to quit. You will be tempted to give up or give in. Please don't. Don't give in to the pain. Don't give in to the suffering. I beg you to fight on, fight back; fight for all you're worth.

"Good and bad - this is the story of my life." Martha Reeves

Facing up to your problems or facing down your enemies is one tough challenge. It takes courage by the truckload. It requires all of the strength you can muster. To make matters a little tougher (aren't they tough enough already?), you have to face the fact that you won't always come out on top. Sometimes the bad wins out in the short run. Sometimes you fall short. Sometimes you struggle just to stay in the game.

But know this; your spirit is indefatigable, your heart unbeatable. If you refuse to quit, refuse to give in; if you are willing to keep your face to the sun and never give up no matter what, you will overcome any obstacle placed in your path.

And ultimately come out on top.

Power Pointer: How you respond to life's setbacks define your character - and ultimately the quality of the life you live.
