"How much of human life is lost in waiting?" Ralph Waldo Emerson
It's been said that patience is a virtue. And good things come to those who wait. These widely accepted philosophies are rooted in the belief that things will happen when they're supposed to happen. And trying to rush things along will only mess things up. So we need to be patient, exhibit some discipline and self restraint - and be willing to wait for the things we want out of life.
If you want to wait around, go ahead. I'm just not going to wait with you. Hey, don't get me wrong; if you want to wait, that's OK. That's your business. And besides, you'll have plenty of people willing to wait along with you. And then wait some more.
These people are all right with waiting for their dreams. They're fine with waiting for their goals. They are content waiting for the things they want in life. These folks are in no particular hurry. They have patience. In fact, they have TONS of patience. They'll get there when they get there. So they wait.
Seriously, are these the folks you need to be hanging with?
"Weak men wait for opportunities; strong men make them." Orison Swett Marden
If you're someone who wants to get things done, and get them done as quickly as possible, patience is probably pretty far down the virtue list. When you know what you want, you know where you want to go and you know what you need to do, is waiting around really the ticket to success?
I don't think so.
All the waiting in the world isn't going to bring your goals, dreams and aspirations to life. In order to achieve the things you want, you've got to go get them.
And that takes action. It takes effort. It takes focus. It takes making things happen... and making things happen right now.
"Lead, follow, or get out of the way." Thomas Paine
Now does that mean you should toss patience out the window entirely? Or that you should charge full steam ahead without a plan - or without thinking? Or that you should jump in without looking? No, it doesn't.
Barreling blindly ahead, like the proverbial bull in the china shop, is a surefire way to mess things up. And mess them up good. Instead, you need to:
1) Get a game plan.
2) Figure out the steps you need to take.
3) Put the plan in motion. And start moving.
Then get ready to make changes on the run.
Like it or not, things will rarely (if ever) go your way right from the start; especially the things that matter most in your life. Mistakes will happen. And things take time. The key is to shorten that timeframe as much as possible.
When things don't work out the way you planned, when things don't go your way, you need to keep your cool. Keep your eyes on the prize. Get better - and keep plugging away.
You've got to prime the well before you can drink the water. Youve got to become impatiently impatient.
"I can imagine few things more trying to the patience than the long wasted days of waiting." Robert Falcon Scott
When you stub your toes, make adjustments and keep moving. When you flub things up, correct your errors and keep moving. Never get bogged down in mistakes and missteps. Figure out what you did wrong, what you can do better, then make it better and keep moving.
You've got things you want to accomplish, places you need to go. There are goals that need pursuing, dreams that need fulfilling; a whole lifetime of opportunity that needs to be discovered. Waiting isn't going to make them happen. Doing is the answer.
So here's an idea. Why don't you stop waiting for things to get better? And start making them better. Stop waiting for some lucky breaks. And start making your breaks. Stop waiting for the right time or the right place to come along. And start making your move... and start making something great, something incredible, something super extraordinary happen right now.
The Bottom Line: When you stop waiting, you'll start having.
