Power Up Passages

Yes and No.

Brought to you by

March 2, 2010.

"All the mistakes I ever made were when I wanted to say no and said yes." Moss Hart

Each of us has the ability to say yes or no. But, as we all know, sometimes it's difficult to say no. Especially to those we're close to. After all, there's an intrinsic desire within each of us to help when asked. And saying no to others cuts against this basic instinct. That's why we tend to say yes. And that's great. There are few more gratifying joys in life than helping those we care about.

Yet sometimes we do need to say no. Not necessarily to our family and friends, or those who really need our assistance. We can say yes to these folks as often as we want.

But there are times when a reverberating, resounding, door slamming no can be our best friend.

"Yes and no are the oldest and simplest words, but they require the most thought." Pythagoras

When you think about it, this yes and no stuff should be pretty simple. You say yes to the things you want and no to the things you don't. Yet many times it's anything but easy. Sometimes we want to help even though we know we probably shouldn't. Sometimes we feel pressured to say yes even though we would rather not. For those reasons and maybe a million more, we oftentimes say yes when we should be saying no. And it comes back to bite us. And bite us hard.

So we need to learn how to say no. No to people who try to prevent us from living the lives we deserve. No to individuals who try to lead us down the wrong path.

No to the naysayers who tell us we're not good enough to get the job done. No to the cynics who criticize every move we make. And no to the negative folks out there who mock and belittle us at every opportunity.

There is no way we should be listening to these folks. And we certainly shouldn't be agreeing with a word they say. So whenever and wherever these folks offer up their words of advice, we need to just say no thanks. And be on our way.

"I like sayers of no better than I like sayers of yes." Ralph Waldo Emerson

But people aren't the only ones who deserve a big fat no. We need to start saying no to the negative thoughts that sneak into our minds. No to the fears that creep into our hearts. And no to the temptations that slither into our lives.

We need to say no to giving in or giving up; no to negativism, pessimism and doubt. No to barely scraping by, struggling to make ends meet and living a life of doing without. No, no, no, no, no.

When it comes to saying no, just say it. And say it like you mean it.

"A 'No' uttered from the deepest conviction is better than a 'Yes' merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble." Mohandas Gandhi

By saying no to the negative things we do not want in our lives, we instantly set ourselves free. Free to be ourselves. Free to express ourselves. Free to say yes to the best life offers. And that's a fabulous feeling.

We can say yes to a life filled with excitement, energy and enthusiasm. Yes to doing all of the fabulous things we've always wanted to do. Yes to making each and every day a memorable once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Yes to bringing our dreams to life. Yes to making our wishes come true. Yes to being the best we can be. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!

Then and only then can we start living the lives we deserve.

The Bottom Line: Say yes to life's best and no to the rest.
