Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Childhood Saying
People like to talk. And some people like to talk like it's going out of style. They talk about the weather, the news, politics and all sorts of other stuff. But sooner or later they always seem to get around to their favorite topic of conversation - other people. And they're not always going to be saying nice things.
Let's face it; you'll never be able to please everyone. No matter how hard you work to avoid it, you're going to rub some people the wrong way. You're going to step on somebody's toes, you're going to upset someone's apple cart, and you're going to make some people angry.
Words and feathers are tossed by the wind. Proverb
Even when you haven't done anything to deserve it, you're going to find yourself on the receiving end of some hurtful, hateful comments. Sometimes spoken by friends and family, sometimes by people you hardly know. And these stinging, spiteful remarks can cut right down to the bone.
If allowed to do so.
When people spew negativism your direction, you can allow their abusive invective to stick to you like glue - or you can choose to ignore their offensive blather. You can let their nasty words get under your skin - or send them back unanswered.
"It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences." Audre Lorde
Each of us possesses distinctive characteristics. These mannerisms define you and make you who you are - and what you are destined to become. They set you apart. They are a part of you. Yet sometimes these traits can make you an easy target.
Since you are distinctively different from anyone else on earth, some may find your differences quirky or peculiar. And some may not like anything about you. So they fling a seemingly endless array of criticism, critiques and comments your way.
Hey, they're entitled to their opinion, however misguided it may be. They're going to say whatever they're going say whether you like it or not. So let them hoot and holler all they want.
Just make sure you don't listen.
"If you listen to the sound of your own voice, you can rise above doubt and judgment. And you can see forever." Nancy Kerrigan
You need to ignore those who have nothing but nasty things to say about you. They're never going to bring any value. They're never going to contribute anything positive. They're never going to make your life one bit better. They're just going to keep spouting off.
If someone says something nasty to you, deflect it away. Don't let it touch you. If someone says something offensive about you, let it bounce right off. Don't let it affect you. If someone says something mean or malicious, let it ricochet away.
When it comes to people saying negative things, you need to be made of Teflon. Never let the unkind words of others weigh you down. Never allow their callous comments to weigh on your mind. And never permit their snide remarks to steal the beauty, the wonder and the magnificence of each glorious day.
They're just empty words spoken by people who hold no sway over you. Their words have no power, their words carry no weight. They are nothing but empty, meaningless, worthless words. You need to tune them out and start listening to your own voice.
The voice that says you can make it. The voice that says you have what it takes. That special voice within that can take you anywhere you want to go. Listen to what that voice is telling you. And start living life in your own special way.
The Bottom Line: The words of others can never hurt you.
