"What is not started today is never finished tomorrow."
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
It's been said that 90% of getting anything done is just getting started. However, that may actually be understating the case. In a world in desperate need of people willing to work, there's a desperate shortage of people willing to do exactly that. That's not to say people aren't willing to put in an appearance or go through the motions, because there are plenty of folks that fit that bill.
But when it gets down to people willing to roll up their sleeves and do whatever it takes to get the job done, the room empties out pretty quickly.
For whatever reason, it seems like way too many people have become way too proficient at avoiding work altogether. Rather than just get in there and do whatever the task requires, the vast majority never even get the ball rolling. While they may talk a good game and maybe even have the best of intentions, their talk and intentions fall by the wayside the minute they have to stop talking and start doing. After all, they reason, work sure sounds a lot like, well... work. And that sounds yucky.
"The distance is nothing; it's only the first step that is difficult."
Marquise du Deffand
So instead of getting started, we sit on the sidelines. We sit and they wait, and then sit and wait some more. Maybe we're waiting for the perfect moment to make something happen. Or perhaps we're looking for the perfect place to make our move. Yet, regardless of why we don't get going, there's one thing is for certain. We haven't got started - and that's not good.
In order to get anywhere worth going, we have to get started. And that means taking that first step. Yet sometimes that first step is anything but easy.
Instead of just taking the step and getting it out of the way, sometimes our fears and anxieties begin to take control. As feelings of doubt and insecurity start to creep in, that first step starts looking a lot tougher, a lot higher, a lot more than we bargained for. Instead of taking that step, we become frozen in place; unable to move, unable to get untracked.
And that first step remains as elusive as ever.
"The beginning is the most important part of the work."
Why is that first step so scary, so spooky, so downright intimidating? Why is this 'getting started' part always the toughest part of the equation? Well there certainly seems to be no shortage of reasons. Maybe we're scared of making a mistake. Perhaps we're nervous about doing something different. Or maybe we're worried about what others may think if we fail or fall short. Yet, in the end, the only thing that matter is whether we take that first step - or not.
Staring at the staircase won't get it done. The only way to get to the top of the stairs is to start climbing from the bottom rung up, one step at a time.
If we are going to stake claim to the lives we are destined to live, we must cast our fears, doubts, and indecisions aside and boldly take that first step. And take it now. If we stumble or slip along the way, we just need to right ourselves and take another step. Followed by another and then another. And then keep moving, keep striding and keep pushing ourselves all the way to the top.
"He has half the deed done who has made a beginning."
I bet you have plenty of great ideas you'd love to try. And all sorts of wonderful things you would dearly love to accomplish. You've got places to go, things to do, a world of opportunity to explore. There is so much to do and so little time to get them all done. So why don't you start doing something about them?
Instead of worrying about what might happen if you that first step, just take it. Instead of holding back, you need to grab the bull by the horns and make something happen. Go get what you want in life. And go get it with everything you've got.
The moment you finally get started, you'll notice something truly amazing occurs. Your mood gets lighter, your life gets brighter and your world looks better than ever before. And best of all, it just keeps getting better and better with each passing day.
After all, you're just getting started.
The Bottom Line: You'll never get there if you don't get started right now.
