"What comes from the heart goes to the heart."
Samuel Taylor Coleridge
In the topsy-turvy world we live in today, we sometimes forget how much we have to be grateful for in life. Day after day we read the bad news. We hear the bad stories. And we experience our fair share of sadness, sorrow and heartache.
We wish we had more. We wish things were better. We gripe about what we don't have. We complain about our bad breaks. And we wish our problems would somehow just go away.
Sometimes it feels like we've been dealt a bad hand, a bad month, a bad life. And sometimes it feels like a black cloud of doubt and uncertainty ominously hangs above. Yet in spite of all of the setbacks and stumbling blocks we encounter, there is a whole lot of good in our lives.
"If a person really has a grateful heart, the door can open wide for so many good things to come your way."
Kay Yow
It's easy to get discouraged when things start to unravel. It's easy to become pessimistic when problems begin to pile up. And it's easy to lose hope as we suffer one disheartening defeat after another. But giving up not what living is all about.
"A good heart," wrote Shakespeare "is worth gold." If that's indeed the case, then a grateful heart must be pure gold. After all, it takes a lot more than guile, gumption and grit to keep fighting when everyone else has tossed in the towel; it takes heart. A heart that believes, a heart that achieves, a grateful heart that gives thanks for each and every gift God has given us.
"And then my heart with pleasure fills, and dances with the daffodils."
William Wordsworth
We need to open our hearts to the best life has to offer. Open them wide up - and allow the wondrous beauty of life to come pouring in.
Instead of focusing on what's going wrong in our lives, we need to look at what's going right. By simply looking on the bright side, we'll feel a heck of a lot better. And we'll make an amazing discover as well.
There's a world of opportunity all around us.
Rather than squander precious time and energy needlessly worrying about our problems, we need to search for the answers. Instead of allowing the doom and gloom to darken our skies, we need to seek out the sunshine. And then bask in the radiant splendor of living.
"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart."
Helen Keller
We're all going to go through some rough stretches in our lives, tough weeks that test our resolve and tenacity. And while we may not be able to escape these unpleasant moments, we can certainly minimize their toll.
When things go bad, we need to look within. There, deep down in our hearts of gold, we'll find the solace and support we seek. In fact, we'll find everything we need to overcome life's most trying times.
We need to take a few moments daily to give thanks for all of our blessings. We need to thank God for our friends, our family and the people we are privileged to touch daily. We need to show appreciation for the magnificent world in which we live. In spite of all of its flaws and imperfections, it's still an incredible place to be sure. And we need to be grateful that God has given us this life, a priceless gift we can share with others - and make a difference in the world.
The Bottom Line: Look to your grateful heart and it will light the way.
