"Don't tell me how hard you work. Tell me how much you get done."
I used to work with an individual who was always busy as a bee. He was busy over here and busy over there. As a matter of fact, he seemed busy all of the time and everywhere. If you didn't know better, you would have thought he was setting the world on fire with his seemingly frenetic activity.
That's not to say he wasn't blowing and going all day. Because he was. He would make a ton of telephone calls. So many, in fact, it seemed like the guy had a phone permanently glued to his ear. And if he wasn't on the phone, he has having a meeting. Then he'd make more calls, followed by even more meetings. Watching him work, you just knew he was really getting things done.
But when all was said and done, the results were almost always the same. There had been a lot more saying going on than actual doing. And while he had little to show for his efforts, he seemed perfectly content knowing he had been really busy all day long.
"If there's a way to do it better... find it."
Thomas A. Edison
It never seemed to dawn on my friend that there's a big difference between busy and actually getting something done; a really BIG difference as a matter of fact. If any of us truly want to achieve the goals we have established for ourselves, we must never confuse being busy with productivity.
Oh sure, sometimes activity and production go hand in hand. Yet many times they don't. You can be busy and have nothing to show for your effort. And you can be less busy (but more efficient) and knock the ball out of the park.
Some people take all day to do what others can complete in thirty minutes or less. That's not to say the person who takes all day isn't working hard. It's just the other person is working with more efficiency.
And efficiency is the name of the game.
"Productivity is being able to do things that you were never able to do before."
There will always be people who generate a lot of motion. And I'll grant you that a ton of motion can create a great deal of commotion. But results are what we're after, not a blur of commotion. So doesn't it make sense to make sure the motions we're making are moving us forward, in the direction of our dreams?
While being busy may make us feel better; the only thing that counts is making something worthwhile happen... now. So let's get busy at being productive, constantly looking for better, smarter and more creative ways to do all of the things we do in life. And when we find those better, smarter and more creative ways, we need to put them to work by incorporating them into our daily routine.
"The men who succeed are the efficient few."
Herbert N. Casson
OK, are you ready to make your move? Ready to have all the things you desire in life? Then you've got to make something happen. And make something happen right now. That means you have to keep moving, improving and stirring the pot, always striving to get better with each passing day.
Whenever you do something better, you get a little bit better. Each time you do something smarter, you become a little bit smarter. And every time you uncover a more creative way of doing something; well, you become a little bit more creative as well. When you start compiling all of those 'little bits,' they begin to add up. Add up big time as a matter of fact.
Why spin your wheels when you can make something great, something wonderful, something truly incredible come to life? By using your time wisely, passionately pursuing your dreams with all of the fire and fervor you can muster, you can make your dreams come true.
Got goals? Got hopes and aspirations? Got all sorts of things you want to accomplish in life? Then make your move and make something happen. And make it happen right now.
The Bottom Line: When it comes to life, it's always your move.
