"It's my party, and I'll cry if I want to... "
The good old pity party. Who hasn't thrown one before? And hey, don't even try to act like you don't know what I'm talking about here. Everyone has tossed at least a few of these self-absorbed cry fests in their lifetimes. A good old 'why is the whole world is picking on me' pity party.
The biggest problem with a pity party is that it can crop up anywhere and at anytime, especially if we're prone to feeling sorry for ourselves. The minute something goes wrong, something doesn't go our way - ka-bam - the pity party is up and running full steam ahead. And feeling sorry for ourselves becomes the name of our self-pity game.
"No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars or sailed to an uncharted land or opened a new heaven to the human spirit."
Rather than simply shake off the disappointment and get on down the road, we get bogged down in an amalgam of self pity and defeat. Depressed, dejected and down in the dumps, we sulk, brood and generally mope around, drowning in a sea of our own tears. Al the while, we're going nowhere, accomplishing nothing and wasting a lot of time that could be better put to use doing something positive, something worthwhile.
Hopefully you have grown out of these pity parties by now. If not, please do so and do so immediately. And here's why. The only way to get somewhere worth going is to, well... get up and go there. You're never going to get anywhere remotely close to where you've dreamed of going by sitting around and feeling sorry for yourself. It's just not going to happen.
"One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn't pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore your faith in yourself."
Regardless of how hard you work at avoiding the pitfalls and potholes of life, you're going to run into trouble. And that means you're going to get a little down on occasion. It just happens. But there's a huge difference between being down and staying down. By focusing on the positive side of things, remaining upbeat and optimistic regardless of how many difficulties life tosses your direction, you'll never stay down for long.
The only person who can pick you up when you're feeling down is you. The only person who can make you feel better when things get rough is you. The only person who can make your day, your mood, and your life better is, you guessed it... you. But sometimes you need a little help, especially when you're really feeling the squeeze.
What you need is a quick pick-me-up, a personalized, super-charged something that can make you feel better in just a few seconds. OK, so what exactly are we talking about here? We referring to something that brings peace and tranquility to your life, something that automatically starts to make you feel happy the moment you think about it. Your pick-me-up can be an idea, a phrase, a poem or Bible verse, a picture of a loved one or anything else you can use to make you feel better; something that has extra special meaning to you.
"Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine."
Anthony J. D'Angelo
Once you have found something you can lean on, something you can depend on when things get rough, you need to keep it close at hand, just in case you need it. Then the moment you start feeling a little down, the minute things start to unravel, don't hit the panic button. Just turn to your handy pick-me-up and start turning things around.
By redirecting your thoughts away from your troubles and towards something you hold dear, you start feeling better immediately. You feel more positive and upbeat, more cheerful, happy and optimistic. Instead of feeling down and out, you start to feel refreshed, reenergized, revitalized. By changing your 'place' at the first sign of trouble, you give yourself a nice booster shot and get yourself moving in the right direction once again.
The Bottom Line: When things start getting you down, remember to walk in the sunshine.
