Power Up Passages

Finding The Silver Lining.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

October 10, 2008.

"Every cloud has a silver lining."

We all go through tough times now and again. And that 'going through' part is rarely enjoyable. After all, there's not much to like about treading through life's most difficult, heart wrenching moments. Yet, no matter how rough things get, there's always something good that can be gleaned from the toughest of tough times.

That's not to say most of us wouldn't prefer good times to bad, because we would. It's only natural to want to steer clear of trouble as much as possible. But sometimes it's just not possible. Regardless of what we want and how hard we work to avoid trouble, we're going to experience bad times on occasion.

And as weird as it sounds, that's not all bad.

"But you have no silver linings without a cloud."
Angela Carter

Tough situations define us. They mold us, shape us, and test our strength. In these make or break moments, when our determination and resolve are put to the ultimate test, we find out a lot about ourselves.

Will we cave under the pressure - or will we rise to the occasion? Will we wilt in the heat of battle - or will we persevere and overcome the difficulties we face? Will we give up or give in when things don't go our way - or will we discover the power that lies within?

Whenever we get knocked down, we really have one of two choices to make. With our nose bloodied and our face in the dirt, we can choose to stay down and wallow around in self pity and defeat. Or we can pick ourselves up and fight our way back, garnering something positive, something worthwhile from the tough lessons learned.

It's our choice. We need to make the right one.

"Too many people miss the silver lining because they're expecting gold."
Maurice Setter

The quickest way to get back on track is to get up, get better and get going again. That doesn't mean we should jump up and just keep doing whatever it was that got us in a jam in the first place. Hey, it didn't work the first time so why should we think that it's going to work the second time around?

News flash - it won't.

We need to look at what went wrong, figure out a way to get it right and then get back in the game. Sitting around sulking about the sorry hand we've been dealt isn't going to get us anywhere. unless you call holding a bucket of tears going somewehre. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, we need to find something good in the bad and then find a way to do it better, smarter and more efficiently.

And then get busy doing it.

"Every cloud has its silver lining but it is sometimes a little difficult to get it to the mint."
Don Marquis

It doesn't take a whole lot to be happy and upbeat when things are going our way. When the skies are clear and the birds are singing, it's easy to sail right through the day. It's when things go wrong, when we're up to our eyeballs in trouble, that what we're made of comes into play.

Whenever and wherever these make or break moments occur, we need to find the good. By looking for the good in any bad situation, we'll not only overcome the problem, we'll also discover the opportunity tucked away in each adversity we face.

There is always a silver lining, even in our most desperate moments. No matter how dire things have become, no matter how much uncertainty is swirling all around, there's always a way out. There's always a shining light to guide us through our deepest, darkest, most desolate days. We've just got to look.

We need to find that light - and follow it - and we'll find our way.

The Bottom Line: The sun always shines, even after the darkest of days.
