"You're either in or out. There's no such thing as a life in-between."
I truly do not believe there's an emptier, more meaningless word than the word MAYBE. Maybe has no meaning. It certainly has no value. Basically, it conveys absolutely nothing whatsoever, except of course a big, fat, worthless perhaps. And what's that worth? A pocketful of maybes and a dollar might buy you a cheap cup of coffee these days.
When you say you'll maybe do something, what are you really saying? Are you saying you're going to get the job done no matter what? No, you're not. Are you saying that you're going to throw your entire heart and soul into the process, giving it everything you've got? No, not even close. When you say maybe, you're not saying much of anything at all. And that's a problem.
"In matters of principle, stand like a rock."
Maybe is a unique word. It's a play it safe word, a keep one foot in the door just in case something happens word. A no commitment, no obligation, no 'I'm going to get it done' word. Whenever we use the word maybe, we're not committing to anything at all. Except that maybe we'll do something - and maybe we won't.
The only thing that's definite about maybe is that nothing is definite. Maybe has no power, conveys no obligation. The word makes no pledge or promise and provides no duty to perform. It is completely noncommittal and ambiguous by design. Maybe is simply a feeble, pathetic, wishy-washy word that carries no meaning at all.
"Integrity is not a 90 percent thing, not a 95 percent thing; either you have it or you don't."
Can you count on people who say they will 'maybe' do something? Of course not. In fact, chances are better than average that the individuals making that statement have no intention of even making an attempt. They're just saying it to say it. And their words ring hollow.
Rather than just say no, people fling the word maybe out there all of the time. By saying maybe, they feel like they're somehow off the hook; at least temporarily. Since they never actually intended to do anything to begin with, they reason that maybe sounds a lot better than no. And besides, they didn't really say they would do anything. So they say maybe and leave their friends dangling in the wind.
And their word and reputation become mud.
How about you? Do you habitually dance around commitments by spewing a plethora of maybes - or do you say what you mean and mean what you say? Do you maybe your way through life or do you just get busy doing what needs to be done? If you're someone who uses the word maybe all too frequently, please do yourself and everyone around you a huge favor and stop. No one wants to hear your maybes - they want to see results.
"Promise a lot and give even more."
Anthony J. D'Angelo
A lifetime of maybes belittles your character and defames your good word. After awhile, nobody trusts anything you say. And why should they? If you cannot be trusted to keep your word, you cannot be trusted. If you're serious about fulfilling your date with destiny, then show people what you're made of. Let them see what you're all about.
None of us, not even one of us, can maybe our way to the top. So why not give maybe the heave-ho once and for all and replace it with words that define greatness? Words like definitely, absolutely and positively show people you mean business. But don't just utter these power-packed words, put these words into action and make something happen.
When you say you're going to do something, do it. When you make a commitment to others, keep it. When you promise to give it all you've got, give it. And do it, keep it and give it each time, every time, all of the time, no matter what. By consistently giving your best day in and day out, you're going to get where you want to go.
No maybes about it.
The Bottom Line: Instead of saying maybe; just do it and get the job done.
