"If you put off everything 'till you're sure of it; you'll get nothing done."
Norman Vincent Peale
Life is a never ending array of choices and decisions that have to be made. Sometimes the choices are relatively easy. And sometimes they're not easy at all. Sometimes the decisions are clear cut and precise. And sometimes they're anything but. Yet these choices and decisions must be made.
And sometimes the decisions and choices we make are wrong.
Let's face it; making mistakes is an inevitable part of life. Like it or not, we're never going to make the correct call 100% of the time. We're just not. In fact, we're probably going to be wrong more often than we're right. And that's OK. As long as we continue to learn from our mistakes, getting better as we go along, we're going to be alright.
"In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing."
Yet some people just cannot let go of the mistakes they've made. They allow the bad decisions and terrible choices made in the past to hang around, haunting them every minute of every day. Instead of looking for new opportunities and making the most of every moment, they become increasingly gun-shy, constantly worried that they're going to make another mistake. They get all tied up in knots, unsure of what they should do to next.
Paralyzed by the gripping fear of making another wrong choice, they're never quite able to pull the trigger and make a decision. They know they should do something, anything, to turn things around. But they can't. Worried about making another wrong move, scared of making another mistake, they end up doing nothing.
And doing nothing doesn't get it done.
"There is no more miserable human being than one in whom nothing is habitual but indecision."
How about you? Are there some prior poor decisions hanging around your neck like a noose? Are there some previous gaffes made that cause you to second guess virtually every decision you need to make?
No matter how big your blunders may have been or how badly you may have bungled things up, it's time to let go. And that means leaving your past in the past and getting on down the road.
Please remember that most of the things you have learned in your life were a direct result of mistakes you have made. That's right, virtually everything you know and practically every skill you have ever developed came from correcting the errors you've committed. You slipped up, got up and got better - and then got going again.
So maybe making mistakes isnt really all that bad - as long as you use them as stepping stones on your trek to the top.
"Successful leaders have the courage to take action while others hesitate."
John C. Maxwell
Life comes at us quickly. Like it or not, choices have to be made and actions have to be taken. And sometimes we have to make these decisions in the blink of an eye. That's just the way it is. Allowing ourselves to get all nervous and flustered every time we must make a decision only makes the decision ten times, a hundred times, maybe even a thousand times more difficult.
When it's time to make a decision, make it. Don't worry about whether or not it's the right call, just use your best judgment and make the call. If the decision ultimately turns out to be wrong, don't get all twisted up in knots. Fix what is wrong and keep on plugging.
Every error you've ever made can be corrected. Every misstep you have ever taken can be rectified. Each and every goof-up you have committed can be amended. The only bad decision is to make no decision at all.
The key to getting where you've always dreamed of going is to keep moving and keep striving to make your life all it could be and should be. Whenever a problem needs tackling, tackle it. Wherever a choice must be made, make it. And when you make a mistake, don't make it a big deal. Just fix it and keep on going.
And you'll get where you need to go.
The Bottom Line: When it's time to make a decision, make sure you make it.
