Power Up Passages

Back to the Drawing Board.

Brought to you by

May 11, 2008.

"If things go wrong, don't go with them."
Roger Ward Babson

Have you ever been working on an innovative idea or perhaps pursuing a new way of doing things when suddenly BOOM... the whole thing blows up in your face? In the flash of a moment, all of your hard work, all of your effort seemingly goes for naught, right down the drain.

Then it's back to the proverbial drawing board, where you must revamp, redo, retool or reconfigure whatever it is that didn't work the first time, or the second time or maybe even the hundredth time around. You keep testing and retesting, trying and retrying, working and reworking until you get the job done.

Or at least that's the way it's supposed to go.

"There is an advantage in every disadvantage and a gift in every problem."
John Johnson

Far too often far too many people toss in the towel when things don't go according to plan. Oh sure, they give it a try, but the minute things go sour, they go with it. Rather than reworking their game plan, they abandon it altogether - and give up.

Time after time they repeat this futile pattern. They give it a go. They get knocked down. And they give up. Not surprisingly, these well intentioned folks fall short in virtually everything they attempt. It's not that they lack the desire; they just lack tenacity, the stick-to-it toughness needed to gut things out when the going gets rough.

"I haven't failed; I've found 10,000 ways that don't work."
Thomas Alva Edison

Very few people succeed at whatever they're doing the first time out. No matter their chosen field of endeavor, most folks fail their way to success. Thats just the way it is. And unfortunately, some people cannot handle it. Or at least they 'think' they cannot handle it.

Instead of bouncing back whenever they get bounced around, they run up the white flag and surrender. Rather than seeing failure as little more than a step in the right direction, they see it as the final nail in the coffin. So they give up.

As a result, they give up on themselves.
And give up on their dreams

"Nearly every man who develops an idea works it up to the point where it looks impossible, and then he gets discouraged. That's not the place to become discouraged."
Thomas Alva Edison

Failure is never final unless you allow it to be. And that's one mistake you simply cannot make. Whenever and wherever you get knocked down, you need to immediately get up. Hey, there is no shame in getting knocked down in life. The best of the very best have been there before. In fact, it's perfectly normal to get knocked down - and knocked down a lot. The key is not to stay down for very long.

Rather than staying down, you need to pick yourself up and start getting better by learning from your mistakes. Each time, every time, time after time. By carefully reviewing the mistakes you've made, constantly searching for smarter, faster and more efficient ways of doing what needs to be done, you can turn your missteps into stepping stones.

The key is to get back in the game. And get there as quickly as possible. Staying down one second too long can keep you down for the count. You need to emulate what Thomas Edison did over and over again; and that's get up, get better and then going again.

The Bottom Line: As long as you keep pushing, keep plugging, keep working to get it right, you'll get it done.
