Power Up Passages

End of the Line.

April 22, 2008.

"How much of human life is lost in waiting?"
Ralph Waldo Emerson

I hate waiting in lines. I really do. For as long as I can remember, I have never liked waiting in line for anything. I don't like lines at a movie theater, a restaurant or any kind of government office {yuck!}. Getting stuck in a line, waiting and waiting for my 'turn' to come around, really turns me off.

It's not that I'm overly impatient (although I can be on occasion), I just want to get things going. And there's generally not a whole lot of 'going' going on in a line. As far as I'm concerned, one minute waiting in line is a minute too long.

"We cannot waste time. We can only waste ourselves."
George M. Adams

When Abraham Lincoln said, "Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle," he said more than a mouthful. Honest Abe knew full well the importance of making things happen. Instead of waiting and hoping a break or two comes our way, he was suggesting that we take the lead and make a few breaks on our own.

Waiting has become a way of life for too many people. We wait for the perfect time. We wait for the perfect place. We wait for the stars to perfectly align in the nighttime sky. And then we wait and wait and wait some more. All the while, the life we could be and should be living remains in locked away in cold storage, hoping to be discovered one day.

"There is power lying latent everywhere waiting for the observant eye to discover it."
Orison Swett Marden

Hey, I know most of us have been taught to patiently wait for things to happen. Phrases like don't rock the boat or you've got to pay your dues are almost religiously tossed about, like there is some great dignity or honor in waiting for your turn to come around. If you haven't guessed it by now, these sayings drive me completely bonkers.

I believe you should rock the boat - and I mean really rock it from top to bottom. Give it a good shake. And as far as the notion that we have to pay our dues, I'm not buying. How long are we supposed to pay them and who do we pay? Give me a break.

Now don't get me wrong, I sincerely believe that it takes consistent, persistent, determined effort to get anywhere you truly want to go. I just don't believe in running in place. And if waiting is about any one thing, it is about staying in one place.

"Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite. Or waiting around for Friday night or waiting perhaps for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil or a better break or a string of pearls or a pair of pants or a wig with curls or another chance. Everyone is just waiting."
Theodor Geisel aka Dr. Suess

How long are you willing to wait for the things you truly desire? Is it a day, a week, a year, or a lifetime? And who is it that's going to tell you when you've waited long enough? Look, there is one and only one moment over which you have any control - and that moment is right now. You've got to go for whatever you want out of life and you've got to go right this second.

It's time to stop waiting and start living, to stop wanting and start having and to stop wishing and start making it happen. It's time to get out of line and get on down the road. And get busy living life your way, the way it was meant to be lived, each and every day.

Right here, right now.

The Bottom Line: Instead of waiting for your turn to come around, why not go out there and take it?
