Power Up Passages

What's The Use?

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

February 16, 2008.

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time."
Thomas A. Edison

I give up.

I would wager that most of us have uttered these words of surrender a time or two in the past. After all, 'I give up' is easy to say when faced with our most trying of moments. And it's even easier to do when we are subjected to life's most difficult of circumstances.

With the walls closing in so tight that we can barely move, with the pressure turned up so high that we can scarcely breathe, we begin feeling like we can't continue one moment longer. We start asking ourselves, "What's the use?" And even though we may want to hold on longer, we give up and let go.

"The first time you quit, it's hard. The second time, it gets easier. The third time, you don't even have to think about it."
Paul 'Bear' Bryant

Giving up is easy, sometimes way too easy. But let's make no mistake about it; giving up is never easy on you. Never. In fact, sometimes giving in to your current problem actually ends up making things much more difficult in the long run. Why? Because you didn't show the resilience, tenacity and determination to keep pushing through the obstacles you encountered. And giving up this time makes giving up the next time a little easier to do.

Instead of gritting your teeth and persevering, you quit. Rather than reaching deep down and redoubling your effort, you ran up the white flag. And instead of continuing to scratch and claw your way though the mess, you tossed in the towel. Unfortunately, quitting can become a habit as well.

"When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you until it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn."
Harriet Beecher Stowe

Every time you quit, you give away a little piece of yourself in the process; a priceless, irreplaceable piece you'll never get back. Then, before you know it, you have needlessly given away virtually every cherished hope and dream you've ever held close to your heart and soul. Worst of all, you have given up on yourself.

It doesn't have to be this way.

You must condition yourself to be tougher than any adversity you face in life. Way tougher in fact. And that type of dogged, determined resolution requires more willpower than most people are willing to give.

How about you?

"It's hard to beat a person who never gives up."
Babe Ruth

Norman Vincent Peale provided some powerful insight regarding the importance of persistence when he said, "Lots of people limit their possibilities by giving up easily. Never tell yourself this is too much for me. It's no use. I can't go on. If you do you're licked, and by your own thinking too. Keep believing and keep on keeping on."

You need to believe in yourself and your God-given abilities, especially in your toughest of tough times. Whenever you are tempted to call it quits, you need to knuckle down and hang tough; maybe even tougher than tough. And keep pushing, plowing and plugging away until you get where you've always dreamed of going.

Just like the little train who kept saying 'I think I can' as it chugged up the mountain, you need to say 'I know I can' as you power right through each and every obstacle you face.

Ready to give up? Not a chance.

The Bottom Line: Become unbeatable by developing a refuse to lose attitude.
