"You have no control over what the other guy does. You only have control over what you do."
A. J. Kitt
People refer to the term 'competition' in virtually all aspects of life. Regardless of whether we're talking about business, athletics or just about everything else under the sun, it seems like people are constantly worrying about what the competition is doing.
Why do we spend so much time, effort and energy worrying about what our so-called competition is doing? And why do we get so tied up in knots fretting over who may be gaining ground or getting ahead of us? Maybe it's our competitive instincts pushing us to be our best. Perhaps we're worried about others passing us up or passing us by. Or possibly it's the dozens of other reasons we could probably cite.
"If you're able to be yourself, then you have no competition. All you have to do is get closer and closer to that essence."
But what is competition really? If you asked one hundred people to describe their definition of competition, you would in all likelihood receive one hundred different responses. About the only thing their answers may have in common is their collective concern about what their competition is up to. In fact, sometimes we're so caught up in what our competition is doing that we stop doing ourselves. And that's not good.
Regardless of why we fret, many of us needlessly torment and torture ourselves, constantly agonizing about what's going on all around us. Hey, can we control what other people say, think or do? Not a chance. So why in the world should we waste one minute trying to do so? We shouldn't, yet too often we still do.
"The ultimate victory in competition is derived from the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your best and that you have gotten the most out of what you had to give."
Im not suggesting that we should ignore what other folks do or that their actions don't affect us in a number of ways, because that's simply not the case. Regardless of our chosen field of endeavor, we're going to face competition, sometimes fierce competition. That's just the way it is. But allowing the actions taken by others to dictate what we do and how we do it is a monumental mistake.
Contrary to what many mistakenly believe, the only real competition we'll ever really face comes from the inside, where we constantly beat ourselves up and knock ourselves down. That's right, the fiercest battles we will ever wage goes on between our ears - and in our hearts and souls. In fact, the competition we encounter on the outside pales in comparison to the battles we must conquer deep down within.
"Live daringly, boldly, fearlessly."
Henry J. Kaiser
The only way to gain the upper hand in any undertaking is to take charge. That means taking charge of our emotions, taking charge of our actions and taking charge of the moment at hand. And that starts by taking charge of ourselves from the inside out.
Instead of tearing ourselves down, why not choose to build ourselves up? Rather than harboring doubts and feelings of insecurity, why not fervently believe - with every ounce of strength we can muster - that we can do it. God has blessed us with more ability than we'll ever need; way more than enough to prevail against any outside competition we'll ever face.
The minute we dare to live our lives the way they were meant to be lived - daringly, boldly, fearlessly - life's obstacles almost magically come tumbling down to the ground. By winning within, we can absolutely meet, beat and defeat any competition we'll ever face.
When it counts, where it counts, why not make it count? Throw your entire heart into everything you do and you will.
The Bottom Line: Prevail on the inside and youll triumph on the outside.
