"A failure establishes only this; that our determination to succeed was not strong enough."
Christian N. Bovee
There are many moments in life that test our mettle, our strength, our grit. Defining moments that challenge our tenacity, demanding moments that finely measure our resolve. And in these tough, trying, taxing times, what we're made of is put to the ultimate test. Sometimes we are stronger than the moment, on other occasions we aren't.
It's not easy to be where you need to be - mentally, emotionally and physically - at the precise moment you need to be there. Sometimes we easily handle the load, pushing through the obstacles placed in our paths, our strength proving stronger than the moment.
"Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength."
Then there are other times when the load is too much for us to bear and we give up or give in. Our strength somehow failed to measure up in the heat of the moment. Or did it? Was it a question of our strength not being strong enough - or simply a lack of will?
There is a huge difference between lacking the will to fight for the things you desire, especially when the going gets rough, and not being strong enough to handle the load. Mahatma Gandhi said, "Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will." And inside each of us burns a will to win, a will to achieve; an unstoppable, unshakable, unwavering will to make our dreams come true.
"Difficulties are meant to rouse, not discourage. The human spirit is to grow strong by conflict."
William Ellery Channing
Anyone can give up when things don't go their way. After all, quitting is the easiest thing in the world to do. Whenever we get knocked down and kicked around, it's always easy to give in to the moment and give up. But to hold it together and stick to our guns when things are falling apart, that's true strength. And that's the kind of gritty, tenacious strength that brilliantly burns within us all.
There are going to be telltale moments in our lives when we are tempted to toss in the towel and simply give in to the moment, to wave the white flag and surrender. But is this the lasting legacy we want to leave behind? A lifetime littered with losing, a lifetime of defeat, a lifetime lacking the will to win. Or do we yearn for something bigger, something better, something that defines us as champions instead?
"Those who stand strong will stand forever."
Joshua D. Clark
Tragically, few people ever come close to discovering the wellspring of strength that flows inside of them. Rather than push themselves a little harder, a little farther in those make or break moments in life, they fold like a lawn chair. Instead of powering through the problems they encounter, they give in to the temptation to quit and consequently cave. They could have, should have and probably wished they would have been stronger than the moment - but weren't.
You don't have to make that mistake. Whenever the going gets tough, you need to get a little tougher. And wherever a problem attempts to overpower you, you need to stand a little stronger. Then power right through it with everything you've got.
Never, ever doubt, not even for a fleeting moment, that you do not have what it takes to overcome any adversity you face. You've got what it takes - and a whole lot more. Yes, you do.
When it counts, you need to make it count. Conquer your fears and you'll conquer the moment.
The Bottom Line: Be stronger than the moment - and the moment will be yours.
