"We don't see things as they are; we see them as we are."
Have you have ever stood on the ridge of a mountain or hilltop on a crisp, clear fall afternoon and lazily gazed off into the horizon? If so, you have tasted one of life's most awe-inspiring moments. With no obstructions or obstacles to hinder your field of vision, you could literally see forever in all directions. Or at least it seemed that way.
With life's non-stop racket and noise turned off and your senses turned on, you were free to enjoy an unimpeded view of nature's beauty as far as your eyes could see. The heavens had seemingly laid a majestic, sun splashed portrait of breath taking radiance at your feet.
Standing on top of the world, life's problems and pressures no longer mattered. Fully immersed in the brilliant beauty and grandeur all around, you felt relaxed, refreshed, reinvigorated. You wished you could somehow bottle up the magic of the moment and make it last forever.
"The whole of life lies in the verb seeing."
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
Too often our days are filled to the brim with clutter, confusion and disorder. In fact, sometimes our lives are such a muddled mess that it almost feels like a dark cloud has cast a gloomy, dooming, depressing shadow all around us.
Instead of seeing forever, we rarely see past the daily problems we encounter. Instead of seeing a world of possibilities laid out before us, we see scarcity and a life of doing without. Instead of seeing the richness, the fullness, the vibrancy life offers us all; we can only see a cloudy, overcast pall hanging ominously above. And like it or not, what you see is what you get in life.
"It might be good to open our eyes and see."
Maybe, just maybe, we are not getting the results we seek because we are continually looking at the wrong things, repeatedly looking in the wrong direction. So maybe a change in focus, a change in scenery is just what the doctor ordered.
Rather than constantly focusing our attention on what's going wrong in our lives, why not start looking at what's going right instead? And don't say there's nothing going right in your life! There are plenty of 'right' things to see, lots of right things to experience right this minute. You've just got to start looking in the right places.
"There are always flowers for those who want to see them."
If life isn't presently taking you where you've always dreamed of going, then maybe it's time to make a few changes. And there's no better change than to change the way in which you see life. Instead of seeing problems, look for the opportunities hidden within each challenge presented. They're there; you just have to look... and maybe look some more.
And instead of allowing yourself to get all bogged down in a murky mess of stumbling blocks and difficulties, look for the best life has to offer. There is a lot more there than sometimes initially meets the eye.
Take off the blinders and you'll discover more good times and good things than you ever possibly imagined. They are right there, right now. Just start looking in the right places. The good life, in fact the best of life, is there for the taking. Seek it, see it and then seize it today.
The Bottom Line: When you start looking for the best, the best is what you'll see.
