"Never tell yourself this is too much for me. It's no use. I can't go on."
Norman Vincent Peale
I've gone as far as I can go.
I've given it everything that I've got.
I've taken my best shot.
There's really nothing more I can do.
Ever heard these phrases before? Maybe even uttered them a few times yourself? Hey, don't feel like the lone ranger. We've all run out of steam in the face of fatigue, frustration and failure. But come on now, saying that we have gone as far as we could go or done all that we could do is rarely if ever the case.
None of us, not one of us, has ever gone as far as we are capable of going. Regardless of how much or how little we have accomplished in our lifetimes, we can always go farther. We can always discover more, uncover more and learn more. Always. We can always give more, do more and move more. Always. The only limits we have are those we impose on ourselves.
"Determination gives you the resolve to keep going in spite of the roadblocks that lay before you."
Now some will argue that there were occasions when they really did all they possibly could. Oh really? You mean to tell me that there was not one single drop left in their gas tank when they decided to call it quits? Not even some fumes? Sorry, I don't buy it. Now I'm not trying to undermine the effort they expended. Not at all. I'm just saying that all of us can always do more than we do. ALWAYS.
We are all capable of way more than we can ever imagine. Way, way more. There is a world of difference between giving up and actually giving out, between being beaten down and actually being beaten. Far too often we allow exhaustion and despair to overtake and ultimately overpower us. We could go farther, push harder, fight longer, but we don't. We unfortunately give in - and ultimately give up.
"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up."
Thomas Alva Edison
Whenever the going gets tougher than tough, it's easy to get discouraged and dejected. Way too easy. In our darkest of dark moments, when hope seems ever so fleeting, hanging on becomes doubly difficult. But hang on you must if youre ever going to live your dreams.
Sure, it's easier to say you've done all you can do and call it a day and call it quits. But quitting will never get you anywhere close to where you truly want to go in life. Turning your dreams into reality requires that you keep on pushing onward, forward, upward; constantly striving to find a way - or make one.
"None of us really pushes hard enough."
We all know full well how demoralizing it feels to run smack dab into one brick wall after another. With nowhere left to go and nowhere left to turn, and quitting seemingly the only viable option left on the table, we too often give up. In the process, we give up on ourselves, give up on our ambitions and give up believing our dreams can come true. And when we stop believing, we eventually stop trying.
Close enough just isn't going to cut it if you're going to make the most of your time here on earth. Why give only so much when you have so much more to give? From now on, you need to go as far as you can - then go a little farther. You've need to give it everything that you've got - and then even more. You need to take your best shot - and then have the steely grit to pull the trigger again and again.
The moment you start thinking there is nothing more than you can do, think again. Take off the blinders and reset your sights on doing more, being more and giving more than ever before. Get going and keep going. Before you know it, you'll have gone farther than you ever dreamed you could go.
And then keep going from there.
The Bottom Line: Never give up. Just keep going until you get the job done.
