Power Up Passages

Do Over.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

November 14, 2007.

Getting knocked down is never our choice; staying down is.

Since we all make mistakes and are prone to foul ups on occasion, we could all use a do over every once in a while. You do know what I'm talking about, don't you? Getting a second chance to do things differently, a second opportunity to change what you did or maybe didn't do the first time around.

One of the biggest problems with people who want a 'do over' is they didn't really do anything in the first place. Oh sure, they may have given it a whirl or even taken a stab at it, but they never actually DID anything to begin with. The DO was missing in action. They could have, they should have - but they didn't. Now they want a second chance. And that's OK as long as they DO something this time around.

Look, there isn't anything wrong with wanting to do things differently the second time around. After all, who wouldn't want to change some of the things we've done or said in the past? The great thing about life is there is always a second chance afforded us all.

Nestled within each mistake we make is an invaluable lesson that can make our lives better - if allowed to do so.

Making mistakes are an integral part of our maturation process. Like it or not, every one of us are going to get bounced around on occasion. Slip-ups, blunders and outright gaffes are going to happen regardless of how cautious or careful we may be in our daily activities. It's just a part of life's living and learning process.

Making mistakes is really no big deal as long as we learn from our missteps and miscues and move forward. Not backwards or sideways mind you, but forward. Learning something from each and every goof we make and every faux pas we commit is every bit as important as getting that second chance to make amends. If we continue to make the same mistakes over and over again, we consign ourselves to a life of doing without.

You are bigger than any mistake you'll ever make.

Each time we get knocked down, we need to do three things: get up, get better and get going again. If we truly want to improve our lot in life and move forward, it is imperative that each of these three steps are followed in succession. The first step is to get up, to quickly bounce back whenever we fail or come up short. It's critically important to quickly get up whenever we get knocked down. Too many people allow temporary setbacks to become permanent by never really fighting back.

Next, we need to get better. That means we need to learn from the mistakes we make. How many times have we seen people we know make the same mistakes over and over again? Rather than learn from these errors in judgment, they seem to jump from one mess right into another time after time. Since they never learn their lessons, they're doomed to repeat them. Whenever we make a mistake, we need to think about what we did wrong; then get better by adjusting our behavior to insure that we never do it again.

Bounce back whenever you get bounced around.

The last step is to get going again. Hey, we're all going to mess things up now and again. That's just the way it is. But then again; what's the big deal? We cannot allow our past to dictate our future. What's in the past needs to stay there - and we need to get going and get back in the game better, stronger and more focused than ever.

If you want to implement an effective do over strategy that insures your success in life, then why not incorporate the get up, get better and get going again game plan into your daily routine? Whenever you get knocked down, quickly get up. Then get better by finding a smarter, faster, better way to do it. Finally, don't wait around; you need to put your new game plan to work by getting going again. It's as easy as 1-2-3.

The Bottom Line: When you do things over, make sure you do them better than you've ever done them before.
