Power Up Passages

Walking The Walk.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

September 23, 2007.

"Our way is not soft grass; it's a mountain path with lots of rocks. But it goes upward, forward, toward the sun."
Ruth Westheimer

We've heard the expression about talking the talk and walking the walk, but what do these words actually mean and more importantly, what do they have to do with us? This adage reminds us to bring value daily while sticking to our values, knowing what we stand for (and won't stand for) and backing those beliefs with ACTION in everyday life. Not talking about what we're going to do, but doing it instead.

And it's that 'doing it' part of the equation that oftentimes proves a tough row to how. Like it or not, life is filled with obstacles, difficulties and problems that test us daily. When it's time to put up or shut up, far too many folks do precisely the opposite. Rather than getting busy making things happen, they get busy moving their mouths.

"The sum of the whole is this: walk and be happy; walk and be healthy. The best way to lengthen out our days is to walk steadily and with a purpose."
Charles Dickens

It's not hard to talk a good game; in fact, it is easier than easy. But actually getting out there and backing up your words with full fledged effort is anything but easy. In fact, it's one of the most challenging aspects we'll ever encounter in day to day living.

No doubt about it, it's always easier to babble about what you're going to do than actually getting out there and doing it. ALWAYS. But let's face it; the only thing that all the yapping and gum flapping has ever accomplished is fill the room with a lot of hot air. Yet that is exactly what the vast majority still elects to do, hiding behind a haze of meaningless words.

"One step at a time is good walking."
Chinese Proverb

If you are truly serious about walking your walk, you need to stop all the yammering and start moving in the direction of your goals and aspirations. And get moving right this very minute with a definitive sense of urgency. That means purging yourself of all of the convenient excuses you've used for not doing things and not moving in the past. Buttoning your lips and getting your rear into some serious gear is the name of the only game that will get you where you want to go.

Hey, fess up now, where has all that postponing and putting things off until later gotten you? Has all that delaying and procrastinating ever got you even an inch loser to reaching your goals? Has all the dawdling, dilly dallying and dragging your feet made your life everything you ever dreamed it could be and maybe more? You know the answers, don't you? So why not do something about it right now?

"It is not talking but walking that will bring us to heaven."
Matthew Henry

While there is certainly a time and place for talk, at some point action with a capital 'A' has to take over. The most successful people didn't get where they are by chatting up a storm. No, they got there by chasing their dreams, giving it everything they had each and every day - and so can you.

Anything and everything you have ever dreamed of having, doing and being can be yours, but only if you're willing to make it happen - and make it happen now. Instead of talking about what you're going to do, why not stop talking and start doing? It's time to zip your lips and get moving.

Lao Tsu said, "The longest journey begins with a single step." That one, all-important step can get the ball rolling - and rolling in the right direction. Isn't it high time that you took that first step right now? Start walking your walk and you'll quickly discover something amazing: that you can absolutely take yourself anywhere you have ever wanted to go.

Don't just sit there. Do whatever it takes to get where you want to go. And do it right now. You need to break out those walking shoes and see how far they can take you.

The Bottom Line: Stop talking, start doing - and you'll start having the time of your life.
