"Give us the tools and we will finish the job."
You've got to finish what you start. We've heard this age-old expression at least a thousand times before, but what's this 'finishing' stuff really all about? Finishing is about one thing and one thing only: staying with a project or task until it's completed. Not almost finished, not 95% performed, but totally, completely, 100% done.
Mealy mouthed excuses and explanations of why you 'can't' do this or that are simply not allowed. The only thing that matters is just knuckling down and getting the job done. You have to be totally committed to making it happen right here, right now. And that type of all-out, no holds bar approach to living scares the heck out of most people.
"If the word quit is part of your vocabulary, then the word finish is likely not."
Finishing requires accountability, resolve and determination. That means taking responsibility for our actions - or lack thereof. In order to finish any task we undertake, we must first and foremost hold ourselves completely accountable for getting the job done. It's not the butcher or baker or candlestick maker who's on the hook. If it doesn't get done, regardless of the reason, it's our fault and we take the hit. And very few of us want to take the heat all by ourselves. It's always a lot easier to take a pass.
Instead of finishing, the vast majority leave a lasting legacy of unfinished business; an endless trail of unfulfilled dreams. Now they'll take a stab at a thing or two on occasion, but the minute things don't go their way they quickly abandon ship.
"Winning isn't always finishing first. Sometimes winning is just finishing."
While these people come from all walks of life, they do possess one common characteristic: they avoid personal responsibility like it's the plague. As soon as things go sour, as they inevitably do, they start pointing fingers in every direction but theirs.
Instead of getting busy getting the job done, they get busy concocting dozens of reasons and excuses why things didn't go their way. And their excuses consistently incorporate one common theme: it's never their fault. Ever.
Give me a break!
The top performers in virtually any field of endeavor will quickly tell you that their lives took off the minute they accepted full responsibility for their actions. Instead of shunning personal responsibility, they embrace it. And they pursue their goals with purpose and passion, refusing to give in or give up when the going gets rough. Most importantly, they finish what they start.
They live for the exhilarating satisfaction they experience every time they see a project through to fruition. The thrill of rising up to meet each challenge head-on and pushing through every obstacle presented is like no other on earth. These go-getters get quite a kick out of doing what others say can't be done. Nothing and I do mean nothing can compare to sensational rush they feel every time they cross the finish line. Competing and completing is the name of their game. They finish what they start - and so should you.
"Nobody remembers who finished second but the guy who finished second."
Finishing the job has essentially become a lost art form, an old-fashioned relic of years gone by. Why not take a step back in time and adopt this seemingly out-of-date approach and see where it takes you. You'll discover that when you consistently keep plugging, keep working, keep plowing ahead when those around you have long since given up, there is no limit on what you can accomplish and achieve in your lifetime.
Want a better life, a richer life, a much more fulfilling life? Then get started today - and make absolutely certain that you finish the job.
The Bottom Line: Finishing what you start is the best place to start.
