"Some men see things as they are and say why.
I of dream things that never were and say why not."
George Bernard Shaw
How many times have you been told that you're not good enough, not smart enough, not this or that or the other? If you're like the majority of us, probably too many times; way too many times in fact. Like it or not, you're always going to have more than your fair share of critics and detractors, people who desperately want to keep you in your so-called 'place.'
Ironically some of these folks are actually well intentioned, not wanting to see you get hurt or knocked down along the way. Hoping to minimize your pain or potential embarrassment in life, these people constantly urge you to play it safe or close to the vest. Then there are others who, for one reason or another, simply want to keep you down; as low as you can go. If you truly want to live the life you deserve, their advice should go in one ear and out of the other.
"For true success ask yourself these four questions: Why? Why not? Why not me? Why not now?"
As a rule, we spend too much time paying attention to what others say we CAN'T do and too little time proving them wrong. Let's face it, what other people say about us - be it good or bad or somewhere in between - means very little. Criticism and compliments come and go like the wind. What we actually do with our time and our talents is the only thing that matters, the only thing that really counts.
Why should we pay any heed to those who seem hell-bent on stealing our thunder? And why should we ever listen to anyone who repeatedly tells us we CAN'T do this and CAN'T do that? We shouldn't. Personally, I believe the word CAN'T is the most disabling and disheartening word on earth, the one word that cripples more lives and destroys more dreams than all other words combined. And it is the one word that absolutely must be eliminated from our vocabularies.
"There are those that look at things the way they are and ask why? I dream of things that never were and ask why not."
Robert F. Kennedy
By giving can't the heave-ho, we lift a huge weight off of our shoulders. And I do mean HUGE. Finally set free of those things we supposedly can't do once and for all, we can turn our full attention to those things we can do - and do right now. Instead of wistfully wishing for the good life, we can channel our energy and enthusiasm into making our lives everything they could be and should be.
With can't out of the way, there may still be one other obstacle to hurdle, another sizable obstruction blocking your path. And that one obstacle is you. That's right, you have to get past YOU. After all, you've consumed a steady diet of negativity most of your life. One can't after another has in all likelihood left its mark and taken its toll on you and your confidence level. You've got to believe you can do whatever you have dreamed of doing and even more importantly, you must absolutely believe you deserve it as well. And I mean really, really deserve it.
"Why not spend some time determining what is worthwhile for us, and then go after that?"
You have a special purpose on earth, a divine destiny that yearns to be fulfilled. The only question is whether you have the courage and passion to make it happen. Will you step forward and make your mark or will you allow fate and circumstance to dictate your future? It's all up to you - and you alone.
Instead of wishing your life away, why not choose to make your dreams come alive on the outside? Rather than hoping for a better lot in life, why not jump into that good life with both feet? If you fail to act on your dreams, they will remain just that - only dreams; unfulfilled dreams.
Dreaming big and thinking big are great, but acting BIG is living large is all about. Why not go after your dreams with every ounce of courage and commitment you can muster. Why not make your life everything you've dreamed it could be and more?
Incredible, remarkable, absolutely amazing things happen to people all around us daily. And you have everything you'll ever need to make some truly extraordinary things happen in your lifetime. Yes, you do! So why not make them happen to you?
The Bottom Line: You have to believe in something, so why not believe in yourself?
