Power Up Passages

Avoiding Rush Hour.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

March 19, 2007.

"I'm in a hurry to get things done; I rush and rush until life's no fun."

If you're like most of us, there never seems to be enough hours in the day. In fact, sometimes it feels like we have too much to do and too little time to get it all done. In our fast paced society, it's not unusual to reach the end of the day and still have things left to be done. It makes you wonder where the day actually went - and how you're going to get the rest your tasks completed. Then you wake up and start it all over again tomorrow.

Trying to keep up with our increasingly busy schedules can present quite a challenge to say the least. Juggling all sorts of appointments, tasks and errands simultaneously takes everything we've got. Over a period of time, this constant hustle and bustle takes its toll. Rushing, racing and running all over the place to get things done day after tiring day can really push us, sometimes right to the point of exhaustion and beyond. And that sure takes the fun out of living.

"Most men pursue pleasure with such breathless haste that they hurry past it."
Soren Kierkegaard

Zipping in and out and zooming here and there, always in a frenzied hurry, we frequently miss out on some of the best times of our lives. We miss time with our families and friends, even time we should set aside for ourselves. In fact, all sorts of enjoyable occasions are constantly put on the back burner as we rush through our days. We tell ourselves that's just the way the cookie crumbles, that we just have to accept missing out as a part of getting ahead. Sorry, that just doesn't compute.

Look, I know we all have responsibilities that we must take care of daily; things that are not going to get done unless we do them. But if we routinely forsake our family, health and sanity in the relentless pursuit of whatever we're pursuing, that's just plain reckless. It is one thing to possess a profound sense of urgency; quite another to foolishly chase your tail.

"Without a sense of urgency, desire loses its value."
Jim Rohn

There isn't a thing wrong with passionately pursuing your dreams, striving daily to make your life everything you've ever imagined it could be. In fact, that's precisely what the best do every day. But there is an enormous difference between using your time wisely and just being busy. HUGE! In order to make the most of each moment at hand, you've got to see your time for what it is: your most invaluable, indispensable, irreplaceable asset.

Doing what needs to be done when it needs doing is the key to your success. Without a sense of urgency, your dreams will remain exactly that - nothing but dreams. But how do you get everything that needs doing done and still have time left for everything else in life? You have to develop the habit of using your time as wisely as possible, refusing to fritter it away on frivolous pursuits or needlessly wasting it in an unproductive manner.

"If you want to make good use of your time, you've got to know what's most important and then give it all you've got."
Lee Iacocca

Focus on doing only those tasks that bring you closer to the realization of your goals, closer to the fulfillment of your dreams. And constantly look for ways to do them faster, smarter and more efficiently than ever before. Don't concern yourself with simply keeping yourself busy. As a matter of fact, you don't want to be busy - you want to be effective. Your primary objective should be to work as efficiently as possible, spending your time on only the most productive of pursuits.

You want to streamline your day, prioritize your tasks and develop a systemized approach where you constantly strive to receive the biggest bang for your buck. Instead of rushing around with a lot of wasted effort, make every effort to invest your time wisely. By continuously looking for ways to trim the excess 'fat' out of your daily schedule, eliminating those worthless activities that waste an inordinate portion of your day, you'll get more done in less time with less effort. Better yet, you'll have plenty of prime time left every day. Precious time you can devote to those things that matter most in your life.

Before you know it, you'll wonder what the rush was all about.

The Bottom Line: Stop rushing and you'll start living.
