"Doing your best in this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment."
Each of us encounter trying moments throughout our lifetimes, when we are tempted to give in to our fears and give up on our dreams. In these defining moments, where the decision to give up or continue going forward must be made, too often we take the easy way out.
After we have run up the white flag or tossed in the towel, having called it quits, we reassure ourselves that we gave it our best. Truth be told, we left our best untested. And after we have given up and packed it in, we console ourselves, taking comfort in the good try we made. Not just a good try, but a really good try.
"Just go out there and do what you have to do."
This may hurt a bit, but trying never has and never will cut the mustard. At least not in a winner's mind. In fact, trying is little more than a feeble excuse, a loser's limp for not giving your best. Whenever people say they will give it a try, what they are really saying is they will give it a shot, give it a whirl, give it a stab, but please don't hold it against them should they fail or fall short. Which, not surprisingly, they inevitably do.
Worried sick that they will not succeed, these folks rarely if ever lay it all on the line. They want to keep the back door open, just in case they are unsuccessful and need to scurry back home. Kind of like 'trying' to swim in the ocean but keeping one foot on the beach... just in case. Unfortunately, this one foot in and one foot out approach is destined to fail right from the start.
"To do is to be."
Instead of committing heart and soul to getting the job done no matter what, the play it safe crowd elects to give it a try. Not fully committed to the task at hand, they toss out a half-hearted effort in a half-baked try.
Then there are others who don't even bother to put one foot in the water. Resigned to failure and a lifetime of mediocrity, they see no reason to try in the first place - so they don't. Good grief.
When it comes to making your life the exciting, exhilarating, electrifying adventure ride it could be and should be, the name of the game is just getting it done. Trying doesn't count. You can try to live a fabulous life but settle for second best - or you can just go out there, grab life by the horns and make it happen. You can try to accomplish your goals and aspirations and predictably fall short - or you can bring them to life by giving it everything you've got to give.
"If a man does his best, what else is there?"
George S. Patton
How many times have we fallen into the trap of trying or not even trying, repeatedly using the excuse that we 'tried' as a cop-out for not really going for the gold or putting forth our very best effort? Probably way too many. And how much more of the best things in life are we willing to miss out on by trying and not doing? Hopefully not much more.
Rather than leaving the back door open, why not shut it good and tight? Slam it and lock it once and for all. Then throw away the key. Who needs an open back door when a wide open world of opportunity awaits, ready to grant you each and every dream you've ever held in your heart? You certainly don't. Instead of living a life of doing without, taking solace in a potpourri of excuses and reasons for not trying, why not live your life the way it was meant to be lived - getting the best by giving your best?
So why try? Why indeed, especially when you can do, achieve, experience and enjoy the best life has to offer. The moment you stop trying and start doing, you'll stop doing without.
The Bottom Line: Doing beats trying every day of the week.
