Power Up Passages

Breaking The Mold.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

February 21, 2007.

"It is our capacity to mold ourselves."
Rollo May

Each and every one of us are distinctively different, a custom tailored one-of-a-kind gift to the world. We have our own particular likes and dislikes, our respective strengths and weaknesses as well as unique traits and characteristics that set us apart from any other person on earth. In fact, it's our unique individuality that makes us who we are and what we are destined to become.

Yet far too often we spend much of our lifetimes trying to fit neatly into a mold that everyone else deems appropriate for us. We're repeatedly told what we need to do with our lives and the manner in which we should do it. Many of these folks giving us advice, much of it coming in an unsolicited fashion, in fact mean well. They hope to make our lives better by providing direction and guidance, looking to steer us down the right path.

"You have to create a track record of breaking your own mold, or at least other people's idea of that mold."
William Hurt

While they may want to see us do well, what they see for us and what we actually see for ourselves may be as different as night and day. As a matter of fact, that's almost always the case. The only person who knows for sure what you want to accomplish with your particular talents and how you'd like to best utilize your inherent abilities is, you guesses it, YOU. Nobody but nobody knows better than you do.

Going with your own flow is a sure-fire bet to ruffle more than a few feathers. Whenever you rebuff uninvited advice, electing to go our own way and blaze our own trail, there's a chance that the person proving counsel may feel slighted, upset or even angry. But if you choose to simply go along trying to please everyone in sight, including our family, friends and colleagues, you risk losing out on being who you were put on earth to be and that's YOURSELF. Tough choices to be sure, but choices that must be made.

"Each man must look to himself to teach him the meaning of life. It is not something discovered: it is something molded."
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Every one of us holds distinctive dreams and desires deep within that are near and dear to our hearts. These aspirations and ambitions, the things we want to have, be and do in our lifetimes, gives our lives meaning, richness and serenity. By passionately pursuing our dreams, our lives take on a fullness that words can scarcely describe. On the other hand, futilely chasing the dreams others hold for us in a lackluster attempt to make everyone else happy, our lives can take on an unfulfilled emptiness that knows no depths.

Rather than allow others to mold you into what they want you to be, you need to find the fit that is right for you. And that starts with just being yourself and stop trying to be whoever and whatever others think you should be. While you may listen to the advice and insight that others provide, your first order of business must be to be true to yourself... and to your dreams.

"He who is firm in will mold the world to themselves."
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

None of us have been cast out of the same mold, not one an exact cookie-cutter replica of somebody else. Far from it. So any attempt at a one size fits all approach to living is doomed right from the start. You are never going to be exactly what anyone else believes you should be. It's just not possible, so don't worry yourself silly trying to please everyone else. If you're going to find peace within, you've got to be you. And that means doing your own thing.

Instead of vainly trying to fit some preconceived mold, like desperately trying to force a square peg into a round hole, why not break the mold entirely and break loose in the process? Instead of allowing others to direct where you go and how you're going to get there, why not choose to set the tone and dictate the tempo yourself?

This is your life, so why not live it YOUR way, every day, for the rest of your life? You can and you will the moment you decide to take over and take control. So where do you start? Here's an idea: why not start by doing those things you absolutely love to do, those things that make you feel happy, joyful and content. Those things that bring your best to life. By meticulously sculpting your life in your own way, in your own fashion, your life will begin to get better immediately. Best of all, there's no limit on how much better it can get.

The Bottom Line: When you break the mold, you immediately break away from everything and everyone who has held you down in the past and better yet, you'll start breaking records as well.
