Power Up Passages

Going Against The Grain.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

February 16, 2007.

"I think being different, going against the grain of society, is the greatest thing in the world."
Elijah Woods

Sometimes we try so hard to conform, to do what others think we should be doing, that we oftentimes lose sight of our goals and lose touch with our identities as well. Desperately trying to fit in, especially when each of us is different and unlike anyone else on earth, can prove to be downright discouraging.

We were never designed to fit neatly into a one-size-fits-all box. In fact, quite the contrary is true. Yet society frequently demands that we give up our unique characteristics and give in to conformity in a variety of settings such school, work or social gatherings.

"The hardest struggle of all is to be something different from what the average man is."
Charles M. Schwab

When we give in to pressure and give up the very things that make us who we are, the special traits deep inside that drive and motivate us, we give up more than we can ever imagine. By relinquishing our individuality in an attempt to accommodate the wishes of others, we run the risk of losing ourselves in the process.

Each of us are distinctively unique, with differing goals and dissimilar tastes. And that’s a very good thing. After all, if each of us were exactly alike, boring carbon copy replicas of each other, life would prove to be a very bland experience indeed. It’s our uniqueness that makes life an exciting and exhilarating adventure.

"When we lose the right to be different, we lose the privilege to be free."
Charles Evans Hughes

While I’m certainly not suggesting that you become a renegade and rock the boat at every opportunity, I fervently believe you should embrace the intrinsically unique qualities that make you the one of a kind winner you were born to be. Instead of forcing yourself to fit it, why not celebrate the idiosyncrasies and proclivities that make you different and distinct, unlike anyone else on earth?

Contrary to what many may lead you to believe, there is nothing wrong with going against the grain on occasion, being a bit of a maverick every now and again. As a matter of fact, passionately pursuing your own personal goals always requires that you break rank and go your own way, independently blazing your own path and doing your own thing.

"Not a few men who cherish lofty and noble ideas hide them under a bushel for fear of being called different."
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our goals are as unique as each of us are different. No two people are ever going to like the same things, behave in the same manner or have identical wants and needs. Trying to mold yourself into somebody else or forcing yourself to do what other people believe is appropriate just isn’t going to cut it. First of all, you’ll never be able to pull it off; since you can never be anyone but yourself. Secondly, you can never find happiness unless you allow yourself to be YOU — the you were destined to be.

Going against the grain or swimming against the current is never the easiest course of action. No, it is far easier to go with the flow, following the path of least resistance. But the winner within begs you to be who you were born to be and to pursue the path of excellence — wherever it may lead. Going against the grain means going with your own personal internal flow, fervently following your heart and fulfilling your dreams.

Going against the grain is the only way you’re ever going to make your life everything you’ve wished it could be and more. It’s time to break away from that hum-drum ‘trying to fit in’ routine and break out a whole new way of living — a going against the grain lifestyle that can take you anywhere and everywhere you’ve ever wanted to go.

The Bottom Line: When you dare to go against the grain, you dare to live life to its absolute fullest.
