Power Up Passages

Talking To Yourself.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

February 15, 2007.

"Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are."
Malcolm S. Forbes

Most of us talk to ourselves at one point or another during the course of the day. In fact, truth be told, we talk to ourselves a number of times all day long. Sometimes silently, sometimes under our breath and sometimes out loud when there is no one around, we converse freely with ourselves daily. And this persistent self-talk can be a very good thing — or a not so good thing — depending on the quality of the conversations we hold within.

In a society where there’s always more than enough people more than willing to talk you down and tear you up… why in the world would you ever want to join the club? What you say to yourself is far more important than what thousands of others may think or say about you. That’s why you must set the stage for top-flight achievement by talking yourself UP, UP, UP at every opportunity. The higher, the better. The more often, the better as well.

"Your chances of success in any undertaking can always be measured by your belief in yourself."
Robert Collier

Does that mean openly bragging to anyone who’ll listen? Of course not. What we’re talking about here is talking to yourself in a positive fashion, constantly building yourself up from the inside out. Easy? Not at all. But necessary? You better believe it. By developing an unflappable, unbeatable self-assurance from within, we’ll be able to deal with anything or anyone we encounter on the outside.

Just think about it for a moment. If we constantly beat ourselves up and batter ourselves around, concentrating our internal dialogue on our various shortcomings and failings, these one way conversations can only lead us down a one way street. A dead end road where our hopes are never realized, our dreams never fulfilled. But when we talk ourselves up, we actively promote and cultivate a positive belief system inside of ourselves. A belief system that emphatically proclaims that we can live the lives we desire; no doubt about it.

"Self confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings."
Samuel Johnson

By talking to ourselves in a positive manner, an empowering "I can do it" fashion, we set in motion a positive powered momentum that cannot be stopped, a life force that can take us anywhere we truly wish to go. Once we get ourselves moving in a positive direction, there’s nothing that can keep us from fulfilling our destinies.

That means we need to stop focusing on what we’ve done wrong and the mistakes we may have made in the past. After all, there is not one single person on earth who hasn’t made a ton of mistakes and miscues during his or her lifetime. What is done is done. But then again, so what? Mistakes provide us the opportunity to come back stronger and better than ever before.

And if we allow others to have a say, especially those who have absolutely nothing positive to contribute whatsoever, we set the stage for a lifetime filled with discouragement and disappointment. Come on, who among us hasn’t been told that we’re not good enough, not smart enough, not this or that or the other more times than we care to count? And what does all that negativity do for us? Nothing. Nothing at all. And what does it do to us? More damage than we can ever imagine.

"Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging."
Joseph Campbell

It’s easy to become more than a bit self conscious with so many people tossing in their two cents about you and your abilities. In fact, if left unchecked, the negativity some people spew in your direction can eventually wear down and ultimately wear away any semblance of self confidence and self assurance you possess. The key is not to give them that chance. In fact, why not lock the door to your inner peace and self esteem and throw away the key?

It’s your life, so why not live it the way you have always dreamed it should be? It starts with building yourself up and bolstering your confidence from the inside out — starting deep down within where your God-given strength lies. You have what it takes — and always have — and that’s all that really matters. Instead of listening to others, listen to your heart; it will never steer you wrong. And instead of following everyone else’s lead, follow your own heart; it will never lead you astray. And last but certainly not least, make absolutely certain that you tell yourself ‘you can do it’ all day, every day for the rest of your life. Then go out there and do it.

The Bottom Line: Confidently talk yourself up… and then back up the talk by confidently walking the walk.
