Power Up Passages

Copy Cat.

February 14, 2007.

"If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want and copy what they do and you'll achieve the same results."
Anthony Robbins

Ever noticed how people flock to see the very best up close and personal? Whether you’re talking about actors, sports stars or the real movers and shakers in the business world, people sit up and take notice when the best are doing their thing. Why? Because they’re the very best in their chosen field or profession.

Who hasn’t secretly wished that they too could join the ranks of the very best, to walk in the high country where only the top performers are privileged to tread? So many of us dream of making it big, REALLY BIG, yet fail to make our dreams come true. We want to get there, in fact, we can literally see and feel ourselves being there; but we’re not really there, are we? And why? Because we don’t really know what we should do or where we should start.

"People seldom improve when they have no other model, but themselves to copy after."
Oliver Goldsmith

So how do we go about savoring the sweet flavor of big time success? One of the best ways to become a big time player is to watch what the other big time players do — and then emulate their moves. Find someone doing what you aspire to do, someone considered among the best in your chosen field of endeavor. Pay particular attention to what they do, watch how they work and observe how they conduct themselves. Then don’t just sit there; seize their good habits and make them your own by putting them to work for you right now.

Think about it for a moment. The basis and foundation for everything we know has come from others in one form or another. While in school, we listened to our teachers as they provided the primary framework for our development, acquiring further knowledge by reading countless pages of information contained in one textbook after another. As we entered the workplace, most of us received some basic training so that we could become more productive in our new jobs.

"My philosophy is that not only are you responsible for your life, but doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment."
Oprah Winfrey

Both at school and at work, we were given the basics. But these basics were only the basics — a generic outline of how things should be done. In order for us to move forward and grow, to really reach out and make the most of the gifts and talents we possess, it’s our responsibility to learn as we go; to get better each and every day. And learning from the very best is an outstanding place to start. The best of the very best got where they are today using this very same process.

You should start your trip to the top by first looking at how the players you wish to copy play the game. You should extract the good habits they exhibit and immediately assimilate them into your daily routine. You should then constantly seek to improve the manner in which you do things by asking yourself these following self-help questions. How can I do this a little better, a little faster? How can I work a little smarter, be a little more productive? How can I make this activity a little more fun and rewarding?

"When a thing has been said and well said, have no scruple; take it and copy it."
Anatole France

A real big time player reaches the summit of his or her chosen field of endeavor by copying the best of the best and then finding ways to do it even better, thereby doing it better than ever before. Your on the job training never ends. Your life-long quest should be to find a better, faster, smarter way of doing things — and then do them a little better, a little faster and a little smarter each and every day.

Each time a winner improves the way he or she goes about things, the winner simply raises the bar to a higher level of expectation and achievement. That’s how a real big time player becomes a real big time player; by constantly striving to be the very best he or she can become. Accepting the so called status quo is a definite no-no if you are ever going to get where you want to go.

"Never settle for anything less than your best."
Brian Tracy

All winners start with a solid foundation… and so should you. They then seek out the very best and copy the best things that the very best do, modifying these winning traits to meet their own personality and individual objectives… and so should you. Then the winners immediately put this invaluable information to work for them and even more importantly, they relentlessly pursue a better way to do it… and so must you if you’re going to assume your rightful place alongside the best ever.

Do you want to be a real big time player, I mean the real deal — not some phony-boloney wannabee? Then do what the best are doing, do it a little better and most importantly, do it in your own unique way. Then, before you know it, you’ll become one of the best yourself.

The Bottom Line: When you constantly copy the best of the very best, and before you know it, you’ll be counted among the best in everything you do.
