Power Up Passages

Stop Chasing Your Tale.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

February 13, 2007.

“Every man's life is a fairy tale written by God's fingers.”
Hans Christian Andersen

Every single day, the things we do and the way we go about doing them is on full display for others to debate and evaluate. Every move we take, every choice we make is open to criticism and second guessing by those we know, love or associate with. And sometimes we get so wrapped up in how others see us and what others think about us that we forget to be ourselves — sadly sacrificing much of our spontaneity and vitality in the process.

With all the scrutiny surrounding us, we seemingly work overtime to please just about everybody — everybody that is, but ourselves. Instead of boldly chasing our dreams and doing those things that grant us peace and contentment within, far too often we end up chasing our tale, vainly trying to please everyone in sight. Slowly but surely, we begin to lose the vitality and verve we once knew, fruitlessly forfeiting our happiness trying to make everybody else around us happy.

“There are few joys to compare with the telling of a well-told tale.”
Charles de Lint

All of us would like others to view us in a positive light. It’s only natural that we should seek the approval and acceptance of those we know, particularly those people whom we trust, respect and admire. But getting caught up in the impossible quest to make everybody like us is an unfulfilling waste of time, energy and effort. Time much better spent going out there and fulfilling our own destinies in our own time, in our own ways.

Yet how many of us have spent countless hours, days, months and years trying to please people who seemingly cannot be pleased? Incessantly worrying and fretting about what others say and think about us can at best completely frustrate us and at worst, drive us right to the breaking point.

“As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.”

Instead of seeking the approval of others in the way we lead our lives, overly concerned about how others perceive us, we need to passionately pursue our OWN hopes, dreams and aspirations; in our own time, in our own way. We need to follow our hearts, going after those things that make us spring alive inside with an aura of excitement, enthusiasm and optimism that makes life the exhilarating adventure it should be. And go after them with everything we’ve got.

Instead of paying heed to the stale advice and stinging rebukes that others dish out daily, why not choose to let loose and lose yourself in the dazzling splendor of making your dreams come true? Rather than plodding along the well-worn path tread by others, why not blaze of your own trail of unbridled accomplishment and achievement? In short, why not make your life your own?

“As I live and am a man, this is an unexaggerated tale — my dreams become the substances of my life.”
Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Truth be told, we are what we are. And that’s very good news, very good indeed; regardless of what anyone else says, thinks or believes. While folks around us are entitled to their own opinions, we must make certain that their opinions stay right there — with them.

We should see ourselves through our own eyes and judge ourselves by the standards we set for ourselves. While we should make every effort to treat others as we wish to be treated and be kind and considerate to all we are privileged to meet, we should by no means allow the opinions expressed by others to determine our moods let alone decide our fates.

We have within us a special God-given reason for being, living, doing and achieving; a unique mission, a calling, a purpose. The only path to true happiness is to follow our purpose and fulfill that need we hold within that drives us and makes us what we were born to become. We need to stop chasing our tale and start making our lives everything we know they could be and should be. A glorious tale of cheerfulness, of joy, of happiness that words can scarcely describe; an inspiring tale of a life well lived.

The Bottom Line: When you finally start focusing on making your life everything you hoped it would be, it will become everything you hoped for and more.
