Power Up Passages

Not Quite Quitting Time.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

February 11, 2007.

“It's always too soon to quit!”
Norman Vincent Peale

It’s been said that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. These tough as nails winners refuse to buckle under pressure, even when it’s turned up full throttle. Whenever and wherever adversity shows its ugly face, they toughen up their resolve, resolutely refusing to give in or give up no matter what. They may bend, but they never break. Quit is not in their vocabulary. While some hang it up at the first sign of trouble, these folks hang tough and keep at it until they get the job done.

So what about the not so tough crowd, those individuals who routinely unravel like a cheap suit when the going gets a little rough? Unfortunately, they consistently give up and run for cover when trouble strikes near. Weak willed and weak kneed, they cowardly sit on the sidelines waiting for the tough times to pass them by. By giving up, they quit on themselves and quit on the best life has to offer as well. Sadly, they never live the lives their so desperately desire.

“Never quit. It is the easiest cop-out in the world. Set a goal and don't quit until you attain it.”
Paul “Bear” Bryant

Isn’t it ironic that the hardest thing to do in life is to get started and the easiest thing to do is quit? Why is that the case? Because quitting is easy; in fact, it’s way too easy. After all, there are thousands of excuses we can conjure up to justify quitting to ourselves. Excuses galore, that’s for sure, but can we come up with even one solid reason for giving up and going home? Since getting started and then finishing the job takes commitment, follow-through and yes, toughness from head to toe, only a select few ever make the grade

There is only one thing on earth that can absolutely guarantee that we will fail in any chosen endeavor — and that’s quitting. History is replete with stories of people who failed to rise to the challenges presented and paid a heavy price for their refusal to toughen up and tough it out. Yet history also abounds with glorious tales of people who persevered in the toughest of times imaginable and came out on top.

“Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don't quit.”
Conrad Hilton

Napoleon Hill once said, “When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and the most logical thing to do is to quit. That's exactly what the majority of men do.” So anybody can quit, that’s not exactly a news flash, is it? After all, it doesn’t take an ounce of courage to quit. The biggest coward on earth could also qualify as a big-time quitter. And it doesn’t take any toughness or tenacity to quit. You can fold like a lawn chair when trouble strikes and still be considered a world class quitter. And it sure as heck doesn’t take any drive whatsoever to call it quits. The laziest slacker in town could be its most outstanding quitter to boot.

However, quitting is not all bad. There are a number of things that you may want to consider quitting. You can start by quit worrying about winning or losing and just play the game of life with all the fire and fervor you can muster. You have what it takes to win; you just need to give yourself a chance. Always remember that a quitter never wins and a winner never quits. And for goodness sakes, please quit talking about all the things you want to accomplish. Talk is cheap. Way too cheap. It’s time to stop talking and start doing.

“Most people give up just when they're about to achieve success. They quit on the one yard line. They give up at the last minute of the game one foot from a winning touchdown.”
H. Ross Perot

All right then, how do you know when it’s time to call it quits? Would you quit today if you knew that tomorrow would be your break through day? Would you quit right now if you knew that this time next week you’d be walking down victory lane? The fact is you never know for sure when you should throw in the towel. The moment you quit may be just another hour, another mile or another try away from success. So when it is quitting time? Here’s an idea. How about never?

There is a huge difference between failing and quitting. HUGE! Failing is every bit a part of living as eating and breathing. Like it or not, failure is the only way we learn and improve, regardless of our chosen path or profession. Learning from the mistakes made makes us stronger, wiser and better. In fact, we literally fail our way to success. As long as we persevere and continue to learn from our failures, victory is a certainty.

The next time you are tempted to call it quits, why not choose to toughen up and tough it out. By staying focused and keeping your eyes glued on the prize, you can ultimately overcome each and every obstacle encountered. And have the time of your life in the process.

I’d like to close with this inspiring poem:

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't quit.

Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar.
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things go wrong you mustn't quit.

The Bottom Line: When the going gets tough, vow to get even tougher.
