Power Up Passages

Health Fare.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

February 9, 2007.

“The first wealth is health.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

We’ve been reminded on countless occasions that we are what we eat. Without question, the kinds of food we consume daily directly impact our physical well being and the quality of our lives as well. A good diet is the cornerstone of good health.

But those things that eat away at you — be it people or circumstances or both — can exact just as heavy a toll as the worst diet on earth. Not only do we need a healthy diet to live life to its fullest, we just as importantly require a healthy, positive, uplifting environment in order to perform at our very best.

“Happiness lies first of all in health.”
George William Curtis

Most of us unknowingly nibble on all sorts of unhealthy negative tidbits throughout the day. And that’s not good news. Wading through a day filled to overflowing with negative people, negative situations and a general negative atmosphere can severely test even the most positive among us.

If you’ve been around negative people — and who hasn’t — you know full well how the story goes. You start off feeling pretty good about yourself, the job you’re doing and the world in general. You’re ready to make today something really special when all of a sudden BOOM, the negative fare begins, served up piping hot.

“Cheerfulness is the best promoter of health and is as friendly to the mind as to the body.”
Joseph Addison

There’s a crumb of ‘you can’t do it’ over here, a scrap of ‘you’re not good enough’ over there. As you’re force fed a steady diet of pessimism and disapproval over and over again; your good mood takes a hike. In the same fashion that rotten food can spoil your appetite; negative laced surroundings are a sure fire way to spoil your day. Maybe even your life. And that’s a risk you simply cannot afford to take.

Just as you wisely select the foods you eat, why not use the same caution in the company you keep? Why hang out with people who routinely rain on your parade? What are they going to bring to the table? A bunch of doom and gloom, that’s what. And we’ve all chewed on more than enough negativity to last us a lifetime already, haven’t we? Do we actually need or want some more?

“You can have peace of mind, improved health and an ever-increasing flow of energy. Life can be full of joy and satisfaction.”
Norman Vincent Peale

One way to insure that you insulate yourself from life’s negativity is to avoid negative people like the plague that they are. It’s been said that misery loves company and these down in the dumps folks would love to take you down with them. Come on now, why in the world would you ever allow anyone else to

Secondly, and no less important in the scheme of things, you need to feed yourself healthy snacks throughout the day. Periodically snacking on power packed munchies that make you feel better, happier and more enthusiastic about the life you’re living is not just good for your mental makeup — it’s also very good for your health and overall well being too.

Don’t know where to start? Here’s an idea. Try keeping some positive and motivating material close at hand, such as inspirational quotes and uplifting stories that charge you up and lift your spirits. And then break out this motivational arsenal whenever and wherever needed. By making a concerted, conscious effort to bring the negative cycle to a screeching halt, you CAN immediately turn your mood in a more positive direction.

“He who has health has hope. And he who has hope has everything.”
Arabian Proverb

Putting together your personalized, positive powered collection is an ongoing process, adding one quote at a time, one inspiring story at a time. Remember, your collection is yours and yours alone. Anything that makes you feel better and helps you cope and combat even the most negative moments you encounter, regardless of whether it’s a story, poem or quote, should be added. And then make sure you keep the collection within reach at all times.

Then, when you need a powerful boost or pick-me-up, the collection is there to help you recover, regroup and regain your composure. And then retake control. Best of all, the positive habit of keeping yourself fired up and full of life will help you recapture the magic of healthy living once again. As Norman Vincent Peale once stated, "Our happiness depends on the habit of mind we cultivate. So practice happy thinking every day. Cultivate the merry heart, develop the happiness habit, and life will become a continual feast."

Bon appétit.

The Bottom Line: Get healthy — both inside and out — and you’ll stay happy.
