Power Up Passages

Fear Factor.

February 6, 2007.

”Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly."
Robert F. Kennedy

Without a doubt, the fear of failure remains the number one reason so few people ever achieve their full potential in life. Just the mere prospects of failing, falling short, or heaven forbid, feeling humiliating in front of others paralyzes most of us right to the bone. And it is this fear of failing that keeps the majority from ever experiencing the thrill of the winner’s circle.

Why does fear hold such a pervasive grip on so many folks? Whether we like it or not, fear is a basic human instinct. Try as we might, we’re going to experience fear. There’s not a lot we can do about that fact, that’s just the way it is. But we can do a lot about the manner in which we handle those fearful feelings of dread and uncertainty that creep in every now and again.

”The only thing to fear is fear itself.”
Franklin D. Roosevelt

Some people allow fear to overwhelm them and drive them to the brink of devastation, failing victim to fear’s chilling and disempowering control. While they want to do better, they simply cannot overcome the fear they feel. Ultimately, the fear takes on a life of its own as it eats away at their very hearts and souls. Before long, they succumb to their fearful feelings; losing out on the best life has to offer. More than just a shame, it’s a tragedy.

Then there are others who use fear as a motivator of sorts, somehow transforming their fears into some sort of magical fuel that propels them past the fear they feel. How in the world do these winners manage to channel their fears, the same kind of fears we all face daily, into a powerful springboard for success? How do they seemingly take these fears, completely turn them around and turn them in their favor?

”He who is not everyday conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

While these seemingly fearless leaders do indeed experience the same feelings of fear we all encounter, that’s where the similarities end. They refuse to give in whenever and wherever fear rears its ugly head, never once allowing those potentially disabling feelings of fright and panic to dictate how they’re going to live or what they’re going to accomplish. In short, they summon forth the courage, the nerve, the daring to do what most never do… and that’s to face their fears and conquer them.

Fear is nothing more or nothing less than what you make of it. If you constantly make it out to be the monster that cannot be defeated, then a lifetime of losing and lagging behind lays ahead. Alternatively, if you simply see fear as nothing more than False Evidence Appearing Real, then a lifetime of achievement, happiness and fulfillment awaits. You and you alone get to make that destiny shaping choice.

”Fear of failure must never be a reason not to try something.”
Frederick Smith

Getting past the fears we face is probably one of if not the most difficult challenges we’ll ever encounter. Letting go of fear, especially those that strike at our very core, is one tough assignment. But make no mistake about it, we’ve got what it takes to overcome any fear we run across; more than enough.

Each and every time we come face to face with our fears, a life altering choice must be made. Will we flinch and shy away or will we stare right back at our fears eyeball-to-eyeball? Will we give in once again, giving up on all of our hopes and aspirations once more, or will we choose to plow through our fears in a steam roller fashion and make our dreams come true?

Look, it’s only natural to experience fearful feelings occasionally. But the fear of failure must never deter us from doing, being and having everything we desire and deserve. On one side of the coin is fear, a lifetime fraught with cowering and doing without. On the other side is unfettered freedom, a lifetime of achievement and doing within.

So why not decide on the freedom to be, the freedom to do, the freedom to CHOOSE the life you ultimately lead? When you choose freedom over fear, you make a definitive choice to quit stressing and worrying over fear, forging a lifetime of unimagined gratification and accomplishment in its place. A lifetime free of fear and full of freedom, just the way you always wanted it to be.

The Bottom Line: Turn fear into fuel and you’ll turn your life around.
