Power Up Passages

Looking Out For Number One.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

February 2, 2007.

”It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”
Kahlil Gibran

In today’s self absorbed society, where a ‘what can I do’ and ‘when can I do it’ attitude rules the day, we have gradually lost touch with the things that really matter most. By constantly striving to make ourselves the center of attention and our creature comforts the primary focus of our day, we risk losing the very best of life — sadly allowing it to slowly slip away.

Take a look around, maybe even a quick glance in the mirror, and you’ll see what I’m talking about. In the go-go, get-it-while-you-can world in which we live, everyone tends to want what they want and they want it right now. Not sooner or later, but right this minute. The more, the merrier. It almost seems as though WII-FM — what’s in it for me has suddenly everyone’s favorite radio station.

”You must give some time to your fellow men. Even if it's a little thing, do something for others — something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.”
Albert Schweitzer

Instead of embracing a long term approach to sustained success, where we systematically accomplish our goals by persistently striving to get better daily while nurturing our relationships with those around us, some people look for the quick fix. In the process, they trample over anyone and everyone in their paths and sacrifice their good reputations along the way. They sadly believe that getting what they want is the most important thing in their lives. They couldn’t be more wrong.

Each of us have a divine purpose, a God-given reason for being. Each and every one of us is exceptionally extraordinary in God’s eyes. We all count — and count for something truly special. Any person who routinely uses and abuses other people in order to attain his or her own goals is not only extremely selfish, that individual is also awfully short sighted as well. People who place their own self interests above all others not only lose the trust and admiration of those they mistreat and exploit, they lose their soul as well.

”If you want to get something, give it.”
Deepak Chopra

Look, it’s perfectly normal to desire a better life, a bigger piece of the pie. After all, we were put on earth to achieve, to strive for nothing less than the very best. But we do need to keep our perspective as well. While there is nothing wrong with wanting a nicer home, newer car and fancier clothes, we also need to preserve our relationships with others and foster a peace within along the way.

Too many people presently suffer from an acute case of ‘I’ strain, where their only concern is what they can get out of life. Unfortunately, this myopic approach rarely if ever gives these folks the things they desperately desire. By pushing and shoving everybody in their way, in their vain attempt to reach the top, they oftentimes find themselves beaten and broken when it’s all said and done.

”When I give, I give myself.”
Walt Whitman

So who’s number one in your life? Is it your family, your faith, your friends — or you? Simply put, if you could gain all the wealth, fame and fortune you seek but sacrificed everything else to get there, would it really be worth it? If you had no family to enjoy your riches with, no soul to grant you comfort and tranquility, no friends to share your bounty, nothing but you and you alone, would it have been worth the sacrifices made? There, completely alone and devoid of internal peace for the rest of your life, would you still burn all the bridges you burned along the way? Get the picture?

We can certainly learn a lesson or two from those whose short cuts took a turn for the worse. Rather than looking out for old number one, relentlessly striving to put ourselves at the front of the line, maybe a newer, fresher, more positive approach to living could make a world of difference in the lives we lead. The real winners in life have learned the most important lesson of all: you have to give something before you get something worthwhile back in return. That’s right; the unselfish act of giving of yourself will get you more than you ever imagined possible.

”The greatest gift is a portion of thyself.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Rather than being a go-getter, why not choose to be a go-giver? Instead of walking on people, why not offer them a hand — a helping hand up or a reassuring pat on the back? Make sure you put your family before yourself as well. A strong, harmonious family will not only make you happier and healthier, it will spur you to unimagined heights as well. And while you’re at it, please don’t forget to give thanks to your Creator who has given you everything you’ll ever need to make your dreams come true.

Instead of looking for ways to take and take and take some more, why not opt to give and give some more? Give yourself away. The more you give of your time, your talents and your resources to others, the more you’ll get back. And best of all, you’ll get everything you’ve ever wanted as well.

The Bottom Line: When you make your family, faith and friends number one in your life, you’ll never settle for second place again.
