Power Up Passages

Goal Posts.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

January 15, 2007.

"Goals provide the energy source that powers our lives."
Denis Waitley

A lot of people profess to having goals, those things they wish to do, obtain and experience in their lifetimes. They occasionally talk about their goals and even picture them in their minds every so often, yet very few among them ever take the time to put their goals in writing. Oh sure, their goals are out there somewhere, but out there they remain because these individuals never make the effort to put their most cherished dreams and desires in writing.

Like it or not, an unwritten goal has very little power. Very little indeed. Achieving a goal that has never reduced to writing is comparable to a football player trying to kick a ball between goal posts that do not exist. Try as he might, the player simply cannot successfully kick a field goal without the goal posts in place.

"By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands — your own."
Mark Victor Hansen

Then there are other folks who have written goals, having actually put their aspirations and ambitions down on paper, but for one reason or another fail to take their goal setting program to the next step. Even with goals in place, these well-intentioned people never get around to WORKING their goals.

Their goal sheet is merely a compilation of what they want, without the all-important ‘how’ and ‘when’ components added to the mix. They have the want power, since they can clearly visualize what they want to have, see and do, but the will power to make these things happen is missing in action. Unfortunately, their goal sheet is little more than a wishy-washy wish list they hope will come to pass without them having to carry the freight. Kind of like having a goal post and the ball with the kicker no where to be found.

"Life takes on meaning when you become motivated, set goals and charge after them in an unstoppable manner."
Les Brown

Not only do you need to have goals and have put them down in written form, you also need a plan of action to accomplish these goals. That means you need the kicker, the ball and the goal posts in place in order to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself, right? But wait, there’s still one more thing you need to put some real power into your goal setting and achievement program — and that’s a specific timetable for their fulfillment. After all, if a player boots the ball through the uprights after the clock has expired, does the kick count? Of course not.

You need to set out the goals you want to accomplish, clearly spelling them out in writing and outlining the specific actions you must take to complete the goals. And you must establish a workable timetable for getting the job done. A timetable that’s doable; one that stretches you to perform with some sense of urgency but not one that pushes you way too hard. It’s one thing to push yourself right to the limit but quite another to stress yourself out so badly that you give up or quit altogether.

"No matter how carefully you plan goals they will never be more than pipe dreams unless you pursue them with gusto."
W. Clement Stone

Oh, there is one more thing. Please remember your goal sheet is YOURS and yours alone. Not your parents’, not your spouse’s, nor the butcher’s, the baker’s or the candlestick maker’s. It should contain those things YOU truly want to accomplish. Further, it is not carved in stone; in fact, just the opposite is true. An effective goal sheet should be a very flexible game plan that changes with each passing day. So feel free to revisit your goals on a daily basis, revising and revamping your goals as you deem necessary.

Making changes to adjust to the ever changing world around you can make your goal sheet an even more powerful asset. But the most important thing, bar none, is to take the action steps outlined on your goal sheet each and every day, systematically drawing you closer and closer to the fulfillment of your goals. And make sure your goals pack a punch. They’ve got to turn you on if you’re going to turn it loose; powerful goals that can make your life everything you’ve dreamed it could be and more.

Last but certainly not least, you’ve got to display the mental toughness to line up the kick and give life your very best shot. And hey, don’t worry about missing every once in a while. If you happen to shank the ball, no big deal. Just tee it up and kick it again. And if your next kick veers of course, so what? Simply lace up the cleats and kick it again. The key is to keep kicking again and again and again until you achieve the goals you have set for yourself. Then savor the flavor of a job well done for a few precious moments — and then get busy setting and achieving even bigger and better goals.

The Bottom Line: You’ve got to go for your goals with everything you’ve got every day of your life.
