Power Up Passages

Working Things Out.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

January 8, 2007.

"Your work is to discover your work and then with all of your heart to give yourself to it."

To hear some people talk, you would think work is a dirty four letter word. There are some people who habitually avoid work like the plague, as if scared to death that they may actually have to get their hands dirty or maybe even break a sweat. They don’t want to work… and rarely do. And then there are others who actually go to work and do their jobs — but hate the work they’re doing. But there’s one thing for certain, neither one sets the world on fire.

It doesn’t take a whole lot of looking around to see that more and more people are becoming increasingly disenchanted with their current work positions. As a result, a goodly portion of the workforce is constantly searching for another job that offers them more: more pay, more satisfaction, more of just about everything they don’t feel they have where they’re presently employed. Basically, they believe that they don’t have it in their current position so they keep looking to find it elsewhere.

"To love what you do and feel that it matters — how could anything be more fun?"
Katherine Graham

Then there are the other workers who are not actively looking to change jobs, but they are not actively working too hard at the job they have either. Instead of putting forth their very best effort, they just go through the motions, wading through one boring work shift after another. They don’t rock the boat, but they don’t do a lot of rowing either.

Not surprisingly, none of the attitudes outlined above bring out the very best these workers have to offer. Far from it. Yet in spite of their differences, these workers do have one thing in common — they can hardly wait until its closing time. When the clock strikes five or the quitting whistle blows, they roar out of the workplace like they’re pants are on fire, like they were suddenly set free from prison.

Then and only then, with the workplace in their rear view mirrors, are they happy. What these people never discover that they can indeed have their dream job — if they will simply stop dreaming about it and get out there and make it happen.

"Get happiness out of your work or you may never know what happiness is."
Elbert Hubbard

The key to finding your dream job is simple yet difficult at the same time. The easy part is finding that dream job. All you have to do is follow your heart. That’s right; look within and you’ll quickly discover that dream job was there all along. Each of us has something that we really love doing, something we love so much that we would do it for free. Some of us call it a hobby, a diversion, a pastime; but whatever you call it — it is precisely what you should be doing for a living.

Think about it for a moment. Nobody has to force you to do something you love doing. In fact, just the opposite is true. It’s easy to get lost and lose all track of time when you are fully immersed doing what you truly love. Once you get it going, you want to keep going and don’t want to stop. Why? Because you love it! Now compare that attitude to the "I hate my job" approach to work. No comparison, is there? OK, but so what? Here’s the so what. The most successful people on earth have fashioned a lifetime of achievement around doing the things they love to do and have made a bundle doing it — and so should you.

"Are you bored with life? Then throw yourself into some work you believe in with all of your heart, live for it, die for it, and you will find happiness that you thought could never be yours."
Dale Carnegie

That brings us to the ever elusive second part of the equation, learning how to convert your favorite avocation into your occupation. This step is a bit more challenging but well within your reach. Sitting around dreaming about the life you desire is nice, but making it come alive requires — and here comes that word again — WORK. That’s right; turning your dreams into reality takes focus, not hocus-pocus.

First of all, I want you to settle into a nice, quiet, comfortable place free of any noise and distractions. Then I want you to completely relax and turn the outside world off for a few minutes. Now, I want to turn your creative genius lose and let’s see what happens.

Zero in on the one thing that fires you up, that brings out your very best. Not close to your best, but the very best you have to offer. The one thing that you’re really good at and love to do. Got it? OK, now I want you to get out a piece of paper and jot down ways you can make a living doing this one thing. Hey, don’t fight it. And for goodness sakes, don’t say you "can’t" do it. You CAN do it — so just lighten up and let it rip.

"Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work."

Anything goes; everything that comes to mind, write it down. I mean everything. Don’t prejudge or cast anything aside during your brainstorming session. Open up and let it flow — from your mind to the paper below. If you will just lighten up and let it go, ideas will come rushing forth like a river unleashed. Wild ideas, crazy ideas, off-the-wall ideas that you never imagined before. And then, once the well-spring of ideas subsides, immediately look for ways to implement your ideas. That’s right, get busy giving these ideas a shot. Not a half-hearted try, but a real, 100%, nothing held back, everything you’ve got full-fledged effort. I can guarantee you one thing, you’re going to be astonished at how much you can accomplish when you throw your entire heart and soul into it.

Finding your niche to strike it rich is quite likely staring right back at you from your list. The only way to discover which one is the ‘right’ one is to give each one everything you’ve got. Never forget that things always work out for the select few who are willing to work things out. Get busy listening your heart and focusing on making your life the one you’ve always imagined. Follow your heart and you’ll undoubtedly uncover your dreams. Then, before you know it, you’ll be loving the life you live and even better, living the life you love as well.

The Bottom Line: Choose a job you truly love and you will never really work another day in your life.
