Power Up Passages

When A Little Means A Lot.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

December 26, 2006.

“Little by little does the trick.”

It seems we live in a world where bigger is always better. In a world dominated by commercials and advertisements extolling the virtues of bigger televisions, bigger automobiles and even bigger meals, who wouldn’t think bigger is always better. And who amongst us wouldn’t like a bigger bank account, bigger house or a bigger salary? The bigger, the better. But is bigger always better?

When you get down to the nitty-gritty, sometimes it’s the little things that add much more to the BIG picture. Look, it’s easy to focus your attention on having the big things, like driving the nice, new car or living in the super nice house. All of us can easily envision ourselves living the good life. But it usually takes more than just seeing the big picture in order to live it.

“It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.”
John Wooden

Getting where we want to go takes much more than daydreaming about the things we desire. It takes action. And as much as we would like to get where we want to go as soon as possible, success in life is rarely accomplished in one giant leap. In fact, just the opposite holds true.

The most accomplished people on earth got there one step at a time. Day after day, they took the necessary steps, large and small alike. Occasionally they took big steps, but much more often small, incremental steps were the order of the day. The people many view as overnight successes generally put in years of concerted effort in order to taste the success they enjoy today.

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”
Robert Brault

Dale Carnegie, who knew a thing or two about being successful said, “Don't be afraid to give your best to what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones tend to take care of themselves.” Well said.

If we can glean anything from Mr. Carnegie’s comments, it should be that if we do a little everyday and keep doing it consistently, then a little can become a lot. No doubt about it, a little here and a little there sure beats the heck out of doing nothing. And doing the little things is easier than trying to scale the mountain all at once.

“If you should put even a little on a little and should do this often, soon this would become big.”

Far too often we are guilty of trying too much too soon. Don’t get me wrong, there isn’t a thing wrong with wanting to move as quickly as possible in the quest to turn your dreams into reality. All winners want to win and win right now. But sometimes we bite off more than we can chew and get bowled over in the process. And getting knocked down repeatedly can potentially take the fire out of even the most spirited competitor.

Why not choose to make a lot out of a little by making the most of yourself every single day? By working a little harder and a little smarter, you will go anywhere you’ve ever dreamed of going. And by persistently moving and striving to make your life everything it could be, it will soon become all that you had hoped for… and more.

I would like to close with a quote from Art Linkletter that reminds us that doing a little can pay big dividends:

Do a little more than you're paid to;
Give a little more than you have to;
Try a little harder than you want to;
Aim a little higher than you think possible;
And give a lot of thanks to God for health, family, and friends.

The Bottom Line: A little does indeed go a long, long way.
