Power Up Passages

Get Over Yourself.

Brought to you by

November 15, 2006.

”You are the only real obstacle in your path to a fulfilling life.”
Les Brown

Life is truly a blessing. Each dawning day provides a brand new opportunity to make the most of the talents you have been given. But squeezing all the good you can out of each and every day requires that you get proficient at overcoming the obstacles encountered daily. And that means getting very good at getting over anything and everything that stands in your way.

Yet, in spite of all the difficulties you must hurdle, many of which can be real doozies on occasion, there’s an even bigger barrier that must be conquered. And believe it or not, that barrier is YOU. That’s right, sometimes getting out of your own way presents the biggest stumbling block you’ll ever face.

”Whether you think you can or think you can't — you are right.”
Henry Ford

Even though we never intentionally set out to trip ourselves up, we still somehow manage to do it more times than we probably care to admit. Moments of self doubt, hesitation and uncertainty — even ever so fleeting — can undermine even the best laid plans. Failure to act or even worse, failure to believe in yourself can stop you dead in your tracks.

Like it or not, you become your most ardent cheerleader or your least welcome detractor. You can build yourself up — or tear yourself down. You can push yourself forward or hold yourself back. The success you ultimately enjoy in life can be traced back to how good you get at getting out of your own way. It’s up to you. It’s in your own hands, but those are the very hands you should want your future to be in, wouldn’t you agree?

”Obstacles are seldom the same size tomorrow as they are today.”
Robert H. Schuller

So how do you get good at getting out of your own way? For starters, you’ve got to let go of the past. Good or bad or somewhere in between, the past is the past and that’s where you need to leave it. We too often allow past experiences, especially those negative in nature, to influence our present decisions. Today is a new day, a new chance to make a new go of it.

And we definitely need to stop allowing others to have the final say in what we do and where we go. Life is meant to be lived at full throttle, not to be watched from the sidelines. Too many times we listen to other people as they caution us about the risks associated with taking some chances and exploring new opportunities. Some want to hold us back, while others don’t want to see us get hurt. Yet in both cases, if you listen to them, you stay stuck in a rut.

”It's the constant and determined effort that breaks down all resistance, sweeps away all obstacles.”
Claude M. Bristol

Finally, you must refuse to give in or give up when the going gets rough. And it’s going to get rougher than rough on occasion. By focusing on what you want to accomplish and then zeroing in on what you need to do to get there, you can plow through 90% of the problems you face. The last 10%, the most important 10%, is all YOU.

Stop listening to the doom and gloom crowd. They’re going nowhere and want to take you along for the ride. And don’t give into fear when it comes lurking around. You need to remember that fear can never beat a person who refuses to be beaten. Lastly, but certainly not least, never ever give up on yourself and your God given abilities. As soon as you get out of your own way for good, you’ll discover most of life’s obstacles can be readily surmounted.

The Bottom Line: Life’s biggest obstacle is generally the person staring at you in the mirror.
