Power Up Passages

Go There, Do That.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

November 6, 2006.

”Dwell not on the past. Use it to illustrate a point, and then leave it behind. Nothing really matters except what you do now in this instant of time.”
Eileen Caddy

It wasn’t all that long ago that the catchphrase “been there, done that” came into vogue. By voicing the overworked cliché, the speaker let anyone listening know that he or she had been down that road before.

If you’re like most of us, you heard this adage so often that it almost made you want to tell that person that you had been there and heard that enough. Yet that same ‘been there, done that’ mindset too often dominates our approach to living and if left unchecked, can significantly limit all the fabulous things we can accomplish in life. Let’s take a closer look.

”Greatness is not in where we stand, but in what direction we are moving.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes

While each new day offers up countless opportunities to improve and enrich our lives, too many of us seem to live in the past — spending our time reveling in glory days gone by or being held back by previous disappointments.

It’s perfectly normal to take a step back in time and reminisce a bit as your mind wanders down memory lane. Recalling happy times and unforgettable moments can bring us a great deal of joy and contentment. And it’s only natural that we dredge up not so memorable events of the past on occasion. This is alright as well, since we can learn a lot from past mistakes and setbacks. The key, however, is not to stay in the past.

”The reason why so little is done is generally because so little is attempted.”
Samuel Smiles

Too many good people seem to be stuck in reverse, refusing to put the past in their rear view mirror. Instead of moving towards the future that beckons ahead, they just cannot seem to let go of their past. And it’s that failure to let go that prevents them from realizing their dreams and aspirations.

The inability to untangle where you’ve been from where you’re going can lead you down a dead end street. And that’s not a road you want to travel. It’s important to remember that your past, be it good, bad and or somewhere in between, is just that — the PAST. And that’s where it needs to stay.

”Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”
John Wesley

You can remember great times, recall meaningful moments and recount precious memories of days gone by, but please put your past in proper perspective. Good or bad, your past does not equal your future. You should learn from the past but live your life in the here and now, focusing your attention on where you’re going and how you’re going to get there.

By ditching that stale been there, done that routine for a spanking new ‘go there, do that” attitude, you can rekindle a powerful zest for living that may have been missing in action for years.

Is there someplace you’ve always wanted to go? Then go there. Is there something you’ve always wanted to do? Then do that. And go there and do that right now. Don’t wait or hesitate; it’s your time and your place to make history. So go ahead and jump at the chance to live life the way you’ve always dreamed it could be. Before you know it, you’ll have done exactly that.

The Bottom Line: Set your sights on making the most of each and every day. After all, the best of your life is the rest of your life.
