Power Up Passages

Be A Victor, Not A Victim.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

June 30, 2006.

“We are called to be architects of the future, not its victims.”
Buckminster Fuller

The longer I live, the more I am amazed over the simplicity of life. Now I am not suggesting that life is always simple; far from it. In fact, life can become downright complicated if allowed to do so. But the recipe for a fulfilling and rewarding lifetime IS relatively simple. Living a fantastic life filled with good times and even better memories has a great deal to do with the space between our ears and very little to do with outside factors, fate or circumstance.

Oh sure, we can allow the pressures, problems and predicaments that we face daily to rock our boat or even toss us overboard. That’s the easy thing to do. Not always simple, but easy. By giving in or giving up, we can then blame the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker for everything that’s gone wrong in our lives. Pointing the finger in every direction but ours may make us feel better for a few moments, but does that fruitless exercise in futility ever get us anywhere worthwhile? You know the answer.

“Victory belongs to the most persevering.”
Napoléon Bonaparte

Rather than playing the victim, where you see yourself as being picked on and passed over in the game of life, you can choose to assume a role you are much better suited to play — the role of a winner. Why not opt to step out of the shadows of straining and struggling day after day and boldly stride into victory lane instead? It can be done — and you can do it. Better choices are the ticket.

The decisions we make and the moves we make throughout our life adventures dictate the types of the lives we end up living. And you better believe that what we do or don’t do makes a world of difference in the lives we choose to lead. That’s right — the lives we choose.

“No victor believes in chance.”
Friedrich Nietzsche

The quality of life we live primarily revolves around the quality of the choices we make. Some of us consistently make good choices and reap the benefits. And then there’s those who don’t make sound choices — who quickly blame everyone around them when things go sour.

Some of us steadfastly follow the right path and are rewarded handsomely for our persistent effort. And, of course, there are others who time and again wander off in the wrong direction — and then toss blame at friend and foe alike for steering them down a dead end road.

“The only victory that counts is the one over yourself.”
Jesse Owens

If success in life is about any one thing, it’s about making good choices. And the first choice you must make is whether you’re going to be a victor or victim in life. A victor assumes responsibility for where he or she is going, taking his or her lumps along the way without blaming or faulting others for his or her fate in life.

A victim, is well, a victim — always blaming others for his or her financial, occupational and interpersonal plight and all of his or her assorted problems. Victims never once realize that they could turn their lives completely around if they would only take charge and take responsibility for where they are and where they are headed in life. Simple, not easy.

"The will to conquer is the first condition of victory.”
Ferdinand Foch

How about you? Are you a victor — or victim? Not sure, well here’s an easy three part quiz that you can help you make up your own mind.

1. Do you consistently choose to be happy or sad? Your state of mind is important and yes, it is a CHOICE.

2. And do you constantly see life in a positive or negative light? The manner in which you view life has a tremendous positive or negative impact on the degree of success you ultimately attain and yes, your point of view IS either one or the other.

3. Finally, have you taken the reigns and assumed full and complete control of your life and the direction you’re headed; exhibiting a no excuse, the buck stops here type of attitude that accepts nothing less than the best you’re capable of giving — or do you occasionally point fingers when you get sidetracked or when things go wrong?

Well how did you fare? If you zipped through the quiz, emphatically answering all three in a positive fashion, then you’re well on your way to making each and every dream you hold in your heart come true. If, on the other hand, you went zero-for-three, you’ve got some big time work to do before you reach the big time. But you can definitely do it! Embracing a ‘victor’ mindset can provide you the powerful edge needed to make your life everything you’ve hoped it could be and more.

OK, so what’s it going to be — victor or victim? Forget the pity parties, it's time to move past all of that hopeless moaning and groaning and whining about the cards you've been dealt. Like the free wheeling river boat gambler, you need to play the hand life's dealt with all of the fervor, passion and enthusiasm you can generate.

There's an old adage that says, "To the victor goes the spoils." So why not spoil yourself rotten by choosing to power up, get focused and get moving in a positive direction right this minute? Then, instead of moping around wishing life had dealt you a better hand, you'll be riding right up front in your own victory parade.

The Bottom Line: It’s your life and it’s your choice, so why take a chance? Make sure you start making the right choices right now.
