Power Up Passages

Reshuffling the Deck.

June 14, 2006.

”Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but sometimes, playing a poor hand well.”
Jack London

How many times have we seen someone we know, maybe a friend, relative or co-worker, toss in the towel the moment things got a little tough, a little rough? Rather than stick it out and push themselves — a little harder, a little farther — they seem perfectly content throwing their hands up in the air and giving up.

While they could choose to call upon their God given abilities and inner strength to plow through the difficulty placed in their path, they run up the white flag instead. I mean, come on, all that persevering stuff sounds like a whole lot of work, doesn’t it? And who needs that? They somehow trick themselves into believing that since it’s already a lost cause, why put forth any extra effort that could be better utilized playing a video game or maybe just going to lunch.

Then, as if it makes the bitter defeat a little better, they mutter to no one in particular that it just wasn’t in the cards.

If that’s the way you play your cards, then deal me out, pu-leeeze!

”Just because fate doesn't deal you the right cards, it doesn't mean you should give up. It just means you have to play the cards you get to their maximum potential.”
Les Brown

This “not in the cards” copout may make the individual feel better about their feeble attempt, but it sure as heck doesn’t get them any closer to accomplishing anything worthwhile in life. And if life is about anything at all, it’s about making the most of the gifts and talents you possess.

A half-hearted stab at this and a half-baked crack at that won’t get you even half of the way home in anything you seek to accomplish, with the possible exception of consistently finishing in the back of the pack — and who wants that? Even the person who is quick to quits would probably prefer to cross the finish line in first place, but he or she just doesn’t have the “oomph” to keep on keeping on. So instead of playing the cards they’ve been dealt, plugging away with every ounce of gusto they can muster, they pull the plug and fold their hand.

”Has fortune dealt you some bad cards? Then let wisdom make you a good gamester.”
Francis Quarles

All of us, even the so-called luckiest of the lucky folks out there, get dealt a really rotten hand on occasion. In fact, it can sometimes seem like we are dealt one sorry hand after another. And it is in these most trying of trying times that we shape the type of lives we choose to lead and live. The Russian proverb that states “the same hammer that shatters the glass forges the steel” couldn’t be more appropriate.

In these moments of truth, when the real players separate themselves from the pretenders, where will you find yourself at day’s end? Will you stick with your guns and tough it out, emerging victorious from the glorious battle or will you allow the hammer to shatter you and your dreams to pieces? It’s all in your hands — and the manner in which you handle the cards you’re holding.

”Patience and shuffle the cards.”
Miguel De Cervantes

When the road you’re traveling becomes almost impassible and the light at the end of the tunnel seems little more than a tiny speck in the distance, don’t you dare toss in the towel or high tail it away. You need to press on and do whatever it takes to get over the hump. WHATEVER IT TAKES!

Right then and right there, with all the chips on the table, seize the moment by playing your hand with all of the enthusiasm and passion you possess. By taking the hand you are dealt and making the most of it each and every time out, you’re going to do fine. Regardless of whether the cards are really good or maybe something a little less than perfect, you’ll discover that any hand you’re holding is a winner as long as you play all out and always give it all that you’ve got.

Not in the cards? Not a chance. Now let’s deal those cards!

The Bottom Line: Stay and play and you’ll do OK.
