Power Up Passages

Seconds Anyone?

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

February 22, 2006.

”Nobody remembers who finished second but the guy who finished second.”
Bobby Unser

If you’ve ever witnessed the final few moments of a championship game, where one team is comfortably ahead with only seconds left in the contest, you’ve no doubt seen the players on the sidelines start savoring the joy of the moment as the last few ticks on the clock wind down to zero. Be it high school, college or the professional ranks, a number of the winning team members can be seen celebrating the cherished victory by holding up their index finger and shouting ‘we’re number one.’

But I’ll bet you’ve never observed even one player on the losing squad holding up two fingers shouting we’re number two, have you? Why? Because the players on the field are playing to win, striving to do their very best. And settling for second place doesn’t excite even one of these fierce competitors. They see second place finishes for what they are — second place.

”Those who harbor the second-best attitude are invariably second-best doers.”
David J. Schwartz

How about you? Have you been celebrating life’s victories or have you had a few too many second place finishes recently? And while none of us can finish first each and every time out, that doesn’t mean that finishing first shouldn’t be our focus, our target, our primary goal and objective.

I’m not talking about striving to win just in the sporting world, I’m talking about putting our best to the test in all facets of our lives. I’m talking about developing a never-say-die, never-look-back, shoot for the moon attitude that we carry with us 24/7. In a society that seems to think that wanting to win or keeping score is somehow or some way politically incorrect, it should be noted that winning does indeed count where it counts — out in the real world.

”Once you say you're going to settle for second, that's what happens to you in life.”
John F. Kennedy

The minute you begin accepting second place finishes as a way of life, you’ll quickly discover that a lot of other seconds begin to pile up all over the place. Instead of implicitly trusting in yourself and your God-given gifts, second thoughts start popping up when you need them the least. And in those life-changing moments when make-or-break decisions must be made, second guessing and uncertainty rule the moment — and ruin your day.

Before you know it, you start settling for seconds and you settle into a second class lifestyle, punctuated with second rate feelings and second hand experiences. Hold on; wait a second! With so much going for you on the inside where it counts, why would you ever settle for seconds on the outside when it counts?

Instead of allowing even one more day to slip away in some sort of second hand haze, why not catch your second wind and give yourself a second chance, right this second? A second chance to live your life the way it was meant to be lived — to the absolute fullest every single second of every single day.

”The creative urge is the demon that will not accept anything second rate.”
Agnes De Mille

By developing a gritty, dogged determination that refuses to give up or give in, especially when the going gets exceptionally rough, you immediately stop playing second fiddle to anyone — right that second. By ratcheting up your energy level, forcefully shifting your need to succeed into overdrive, you quickly cultivate an indefatigable spirit within that simply refuses to accept anything second rate in your life EVER AGAIN!

Look, I know we’re all going to get knocked down more times than we care to remember. But getting knocked down or kicked around is no big deal — as long as we immediately get up, get better and get going again — always keeping our eyes on the prize.

Why should you ever sit on the sidelines, resigned to playing second string to those around you, when you can instead make something special happen by happening yourself? You shouldn’t — and you won’t — when you refuse to settle for anything less than the best life has to offer you and your loved ones.

When it comes to seconds, you’re second all right — second to none!

The Bottom Line: You can make finishing first second nature by refusing to settle for anything less than the best.
