Power Up Passages

Easy Doesn't Always Do It.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

December 21, 2005.

“What is easy is seldom excellent.”
Samuel Johnson

Easy does it.

How many times have we heard this familiar catchphrase? A ton of times; but what exactly does this silly cliché mean? Easy does what? For an old adage that’s sure got a lot of miles on it, it doesn’t seem to pack much of a punch.

And then there’s the always popular saying, take it easy. Now there’s a well worn expression if there ever was one. But what’s it supposed to mean? We should take what easy — and when? What sort of guidance are people dishing out with all of this easy mumbo-jumbo?

“Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one's thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

But wait; there are a thousand more easy sayings, including easy come — easy go, easier said than done and sitting on easy street. By the sound of these axioms, life sure seems real easy. Or does it? I’m betting that if you’re like the majority of us, easy hasn’t done much of anything at all for you.

I may be missing the boat here, but easy doesn’t seem to have a whole lot to do with getting things done or making things happen. Oh sure, it’s always easier to quit, slow down, point the finger and slack off. But where does this type of useless activity — or should I say inactivity — get you in the long run? Nowhere, that’s where.

Sure, it’s generally easier to play it safe and keep things close to your vest than to face life’s toughest challenges head-on. But so what? Let’s be honest, what has taking the easy way out ever done for you?

“Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for powers equal to your tasks.”
Phillips Brooks

Who could really argue with the position that it’s easier to play it safe and keep things close to the vest than to lay it all on the line? But come on, for crying out loud, will this ‘easy does it’ approach to living take you where you’ve always dreamed of going? Deep down, you know the answer, don’t you?

Instead of taking it easy or seeking the easy way out, why not take charge of your life and embrace the challenges presented daily, even the most difficult ones? Easier said than done? Not really. Rather than looking to plop down on the couch and set up shop on easy street, why not start jumping at the chance to make things happen by HAPPENING yourself?

“All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.”
Galileo Galilei

Life is a never ending array of choices, oftentimes tough choices that require unwavering commitment and courage. Unfortunately, these are fleeting traits found in increasingly short supply nowadays. It seems that whenever the going gets tough these days, the vast majority start looking for the easy way out of town. But easy doesn’t always do it. As a matter of fact, easy rarely if ever gets the job done.

Isn’t it about time for you to take the bull by the horns and do whatever it takes to get you where you’ve always wanted to go? Sure it is. And if that means making difficult decisions, make them. If that requires taking on life’s not so easy trials and tribulations, take them on. The sooner you start facing life’s challenges and making the not so easy choices that accompany them, you will be astonished at how much easier your life will suddenly become.

The Bottom Line: Life becomes much easier the moment you start doing what you need to do when it needs to be done.
