Power Up Passages

More Than You Bargained For.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

November 30, 2005.

”He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.”
Benjamin Franklin

How many times have you uttered the well-worn words, “I’m doing the best I can?” In all likelihood, you have repeated this expression on more than a handful of occasions; probably more times than you even realize. In fact, I would wager that you have casually tossed that predictable phrase around like a Frisbee in the park on a Sunday afternoon.

Why did I say “predictable?” Because if you’re like the majority of us, you have overworked that phrase while simultaneously underutilizing your enormous God given talents. Hey, let’s face it; just about anyone can talk a good game. That’s probably where the phrase ‘talk is cheap’ came from. But when push comes to shove and it’s time to put up or shut up, most of us step back or step away. Why? In a nutshell, life asked more from us than we had bargained to give.

”Out of difficulties grow miracles.”
Jean De La Bruyere

Take, for example, the last time you found yourself face to face with the most demanding of life’s obstacles. And I’m not talking about one of those nagging, run-of-the-mill choices that must be made countless times throughout the day. Those do not qualify; not by a long shot. What I am talking about is a real wing-ding doozie of a stumbling block that completely obstructs the road ahead.

At that precise moment in time, with your resolve and determination being tested well past the breaking point, what did you do? Did you embrace this moment of truth, mash the accelerator right to the floorboard and zoom ahead at full speed? Or did you step back instead and place some space between you and the challenge, giving yourself a little breathing room — maybe even too much room?

”Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents, which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.”

Why does it sometimes seem that whenever life flings a complicated mess in our path — and by that I mean one of those knee-buckling, nerve-racking, life-changing challenges that’s way more than we bargained for — that we’re way too quick to run up the white flag and surrender? Why, with all of the talent and tenacity that we have been blessed with by our Creator, do we look for the easy way out of town when all of the chips are on the table? Why, why, why?

Why do we rarely if ever dig deep enough inside of ourselves to uncover the radiant brilliance that burns so brightly within? Rather than reach down and discover that something extra that can spring us over the hump, we far too often reach into our trusty old grab bag of excuses. And if things get too hot and we find ourselves a little too close to the flame, we can even resort to that old dependable security blanket, telling others that we are ‘doing our best’ when we know deep down that we didn’t even try. What a cop-out.

”Adventure is not outside a man; it is within.”
David Grayson

Unfortunately, when the going gets tough, too many of us give out and get in the self destructive habit of giving in. By simply saying I did my best, you secretly reassure yourself that it’s OK to fall short in your quest to be your best. And by leaving that back door open, cracked just enough to sneak through in case you come up short, do you ever really put your best to the test? No, you don’t. And that’s a shame.

These seemingly innocent words, ‘I did my best,’ slip oh so easily through our lips, especially at those times when we begin feeling a bit discouraged or find ourselves falling short in our pursuit to make our lives the exciting adventure we long to live. And with them slip away our hopes, dreams and lifelong aspirations as well. Come on, let’s fess up; whenever and wherever you had to convince yourself or someone else that you were doing the best you could do, were you really giving it your ALL — and then giving a little more? Not a chance. Why? Because the best you have to offer keeps getting better every single day. How in the world could you be giving your best when you’ve only begun to scratch the surface of your potential?

”We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand — and melting like a snowflake.”
Marie B. Ray

Doing what you think is your best is seldom good enough; especially if you fervently want to bring your fondest dreams to life. In order to get what you really want, I mean really want, you’ve got to give way more than you ever bargained for — and keep on giving.

Rest assured, God will never pit you up against an obstacle or situation you are incapable of overcoming. Never! When you learn to place your eternal trust in God and your God-given abilities, you will discover that there isn’t a challenge too great or a roadblock too difficult. When you start doing your best, walking your walk rather than talking the talk, your actions will speak far louder than words ever did. Best of all, you’ll find that you have more power, more strength and more toughness inside of you than you ever bargained for.

The Bottom Line: Look inside of yourself and you’ll discover everything you need to make your dreams come alive.
