Power Up Passages

Forever Footprints.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

February 12, 2005.

“Forever is composed of nows.”
Emily Dickinson

In a society where instant gratification never seems soon enough, where we want what we want and we want it right now, why are we so conditioned to putting all sorts of things off that need to be done? Instead of just knuckling down and doing what's required to get the job done, we too often delay action to another day and another time. We keep telling ourselves that we will get to them somewhere down the road, yet we never seem to reach that 'somewhere'.

Even when it comes to those tasks that we desperately need to complete right now, life changing decisions that beg for immediate attention, why is it always so easy to postpone or delay action to a later date? Why do we rarely if ever get around to doing those tasks we put off and off and off? Good questions to be sure; but questions without even one good answer. Not one! Sound eerily familiar?

Hey, let’s face it; rolling up your sleeves, getting after it and then staying with it until you get the job done has never been and never will be the path of least resistance. NEVER! This course of action takes courage, commitment and concentration — rare commodities that seem to grow scarcer with each passing day. The habit of doing what needs to be done when it needs doing, that ever elusive 'do it now' attitude, is what separates the real players from the pretenders in life.

“Footprints on the sands of time are not made by sitting down.”

No doubt about it, is always far easier to pursue the path of least persistence by grabbing the remote control, snaring another doughnut and sliding back into the easy chair. There, sitting in a stupefied daze for hours on end, we forever put the life we could and should be living on the back burner as we waste time and squander one opportunity after another. Day after day, year after year — the beat goes on and on.

Over time and oftentimes unknowingly, we become increasingly better at concocting all sorts of imaginative ways to keep from doing what needs to be done. As we put off more things, more often, we actually con ourselves into believing, I mean really believing, that it’s OK to keep procrastinating our lives away. Before we know it, a lifetime of opportunity has gradually slipped through our fingertips, replaced with a lifetime of regrets, sorrow and feelings of unfulfilled emptiness. We wonder what happened and where we went wrong, painfully reflecting back on what might have been. Looking back, we can only see an aimless set of footprints in the sand.

"One who walks in another's tracks leaves no footprints."

Seems kind of crazy when you think about it, doesn’t it? Instead of grabbing life by the horns and taking control of our destiny by taking charge of today’s challenges, we repeatedly leave a path of half finished or worse yet, never started tasks as our calling card. Instead of blazing a trail of accomplishment and achievement throughout our lives, far too often our first inclination is to formulate reasons for not doing what needs to be done or postpone action to somewhere down the road — or both. Instead of making time and making history, many of us choose to make excuses and leave few if any distinguishable footprints of our time here on earth.

Regardless of whether we realize it or not, we possess an inner drive deep within us that yearns to take advantage of each moment... right here and right now. Not sooner or later or whenever we get around to it, but right this very minute. This wellspring of energy, excitement and enthusiasm for living begs to be unleashed; anxiously awaiting the chance to catch the opportunity at hand and catch fire. Amazingly, even after years of dumping cold water on our internal zest to be our best, we cannot extinguish our inexorable desire to accomplish great and memorable feats.

“It is for us to pray not for tasks equal to our powers, but for powers equal to our tasks, to go forward with a great desire forever beating at the door of our hearts as we travel toward our distant goal.”
Helen Keller

Whenever we quiet and suppress our zeal for living, choosing instead to postpone action to another day or another time, we forever forfeit the opportunity that came — and went — with that moment. And when we make a life of making excuses and delaying action, we forever consign ourselves to a life of living without. A life forever robbed of its richness, a life forever stripped of its passion. In short, a life that’s hardly worth living. It doesn’t have to be this way.

The next time opportunity comes calling, why not shun that temptation to put off, postpone or push back action by tapping into your unique need to succeed? When you do, you will quickly discover that the best way to make something happen is to start happening yourself. Right here, right now.

By taking immediate action, without even one moment of hesitation or indecision, you instantly breathe an exhilarating breath of fresh air into your lungs, pumping verve and vitality straight into your heart and soul. You’ll suddenly come alive with a burning, white heat passion for living once again; basking in an astounding, almost beyond words sensation that you probably haven’t felt in ages. At once and without warning, your engines will rev to full throttle once more. You'll catch fire as that fireball of internal energy explodes onto the scene.

You’ll begin loving the life that you live and living the life that you love. Instead of procrastinating and putting off, you will find yourself embracing new opportunities as your life takes on more meaning, more fulfillment, more of just about everything you've always dreamed about. As you push yourself higher than you ever imagined possible and further than you ever dreamed attainable, you'll wonder what took you so long. Delaying, dilly-dallying and dragging your feet will become distant memories, replaced by a DO IT NOW tenacity that simply cannot be stopped. And best of all, you will forever leave footprints of a life well lived.

The Bottom Line: When you live a life worth living, you leave footprints that live forever.
