Power Up Passages

When Less Is More.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

February 7, 2005.

"Our patience will achieve more than our force."
Edmund Burke

In what seems to be a never ending pursuit to have more, do more and be more, there sure are a lot of folks ending up with the short end of the stick. How in the world can that possibly be the case? After all, if we constantly set our sights on making the most of every moment, pushing ourselves well past our present boundaries, shouldn’t we be able to achieve more, accomplish more and attain more than ever before? Maybe yes; but then again, maybe no — and here’s why.

While winners are renowned for their distinctive ability to consistently squeeze more out of less, they also know when to take their foot off the accelerator now and again. And it’s this knack for knowing how and when to give it the gas or lightly tap the brakes that makes all the difference in the world.

"Our fatigue is often caused not by work, but by worry, frustration and resentment."
Dale Carnegie

These champions absolutely love to revel in the unparalleled aura they experience each and every time they scale yet another summit in their unending quest for excellence. To them, nothing comes close to the incomparable feeling of putting their best to the test and coming out on top.

But these top achievers also realize that the process of taking their lives to another level can sap their energy and zap their enthusiasm if they’re not careful. So they are careful, very careful. They may bend under life’s pressures now and again, but they never break — or breakdown. They have discovered that sometimes less is MORE, and so should you.

"I still need more healthy rest in order to work at my best. My health is the main capital I have and I want to administer it intelligently."
Ernest Hemingway

If you continually heap way too much pressure on yourself, pushing and pushing well past your breaking point, there is a better than average chance that sooner or later something will snap somewhere along the line. And that’s an avoidable setback you can ill afford to suffer. After all, the road to the top is already full of enough potholes and pitfalls that can shatter even the stoutest of spirits, if given half a chance. The key is to not give adversity that chance. That’s why it is essential that you to stay on top of your game.

Think about it for a moment. If you could significantly reduce some of life’s worries, pressures and stress, how would that make you feel? With fewer reservations about your future, you would feel a lot more confident about the direction you’re headed, wouldn’t you? You bet you would. And with less stress and strain siphoning your get up and go, isn’t there a better chance that you could get up and go farther than you’ve ever gone before. Absolutely!

"A cyclone drives its powers from a calm center. So does a person."
Norman Vincent Peale

While you definitely want to nurture the all-important ability to press on when you are tempted to give up, refusing to give in to fatigue or misfortune, you also want to make certain that you never push yourself past the breaking point. It’s far better to back off when your body tells you to, giving yourself the opportunity to fully recharge your batteries, than to burn out in the process.

If you truly desire more fun, more enjoyment and more achievement than you’ve ever dreamed possible (and who doesn’t?), then you’ve got to condition yourself to get more done and do it with less agitation, less hassle and less stress. OK, it sounds great, but can you really enjoy a more rewarding, more exciting and more exhilarating life while reducing life’s apprehension and anxiety factors at the same time? You bet you can! The moment less becomes more in your life, you’ll start having more joy, more self-confidence, more of just about everything good life has to offer. And believe you me; it has a lot of fabulous things to offer!

So how do you go about turning down all the unsettling noise that drives you bonkers while turning up the volume of personal productivity, happiness and fulfillment at the same time? You do so by learning to tune into what your body is telling you at any given moment. Sometimes you’ll find that all systems are “go” and you can blast ahead full throttle with nothing held back. Then there will be other occasions when you need to throttle back just a tad and recapture the magic, fervor and passion that make life the thrilling adventure you deserve to live. When you learn to listen to your inner voice, you will understand how more can sometimes be less… and why less can oftentimes be more.

The Bottom Line: A little less can somtimes equal a whole lot more.
