Power Up Passages

Writing Wrongs.

Brought to you by

May 13, 2004.

“By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands — your own.”
Mark Victor Hansen

In spite of our best efforts, we all still somehow manage to make our fair share of mistakes. Some of us even make more than our fair share. Or at least it seems that way. As the miscues and missteps pile up all around us, it sometimes feels as though the proverbial road to the top is an endless array of potholes, detours and dead end streets.

Yet one of the biggest blunders we could ever commit goes largely unnoticed by the majority of people out there. And that’s the mistake of not writing down our goals on paper. While good meaning folks regularly encounter a lifetime filled with wrong choices, wrong decisions and wrong directions, they never once realize that they are trying to navigate through life without a decent roadmap. They have never once written down their goals.

“Crystallize your goals. Make a plan for achieving them and set yourself a deadline. Then, with supreme confidence, determination and disregard for obstacles and other people's criticisms; carry out your plan."
Paul J. Meyer

OK, so maybe you don’t think that putting your goals and aspirations in writing is such a big deal? Fair enough, but here’s a simple question for you. How can anyone, including you, hit a target they don’t have? Oh sure, I’m sure you may have a whole litany of things you want to accomplish socked away in your mind and an assortment of cherished dreams buried deep down in your heart and soul, but is that enough?

In today’s fast paced society, where it constantly seems like we never have enough time to do all of the things we really need to do, your goals can sometimes get swept away in the daily hustle and bustle grind. Think about it for a moment; what happens to your goals and dreams when life’s disruptions and distractions hit you full force? If you are like most of us, they are put on the back burner while we try to put out all the fires. Then just about the time we think we have everything under control; the chaos and commotion breaks out all over again. Before long, the goals have taken a permanent back seat along with your chances of obtaining them. Doesn’t sound like a very good program, does it?

“Don’t just think it, ink it!”
Mark Victor Hansen

You should never underestimate the power of the written word. Written goals, especially when they are reviewed and revised daily, have a powerful way of transforming all of our dreams, wishes and desires into reality, if given even half a chance. When you write down a goal along with a timetable for its attainment, you breathe life into that goal; giving it meaning while at the same bringing a heightened sense of purpose to your life.

By taking the time to write down your goals, in essence the recipe for your life’s destiny, you personalize the goals — stamping your indelible mark of excellence upon each and every one. And by establishing a deadline for achieving the goal, you light a fire that cannot and will not be extinguished. Regardless of the obstacles life tosses in your path, your roadmap to success helps you stay on course. With your goals in hand, you know where you’re going and better yet, how you’re going to get there. And while thinking it and inking it is a very good start, more than most people ever get done, there’s still one more piece to this goal setting puzzle.

“Know your goal, make a plan and pull the trigger.”
Phil C. McGraw

The act of writing down your goals and reviewing them frequently isn’t going to get you very far unless and until you get going as well. And that means action — getting your rear in gear and keeping it there. As you begin setting your sights well beyond what you can presently see, setting goals that fuel the fire in your soul, you in essence begin scripting the rest — and the best — of your life.

You’ll quickly discover that life takes on a whole lot more meaning and excitement when you set goals that charge you up. But again, getting fired up isn’t enough by itself. That’s where setting an aggressive timetable for the realization of the goal comes into play. By setting a date for the goal to be yours, you pull the trigger and set off a positive chain reaction in your life. Once you begin charging after your goals in relentless fashion, focusing your efforts on making each and every goal a reality, there is no force on earth that can keep you bringing your dreams to life. So why not start writing life's wrongs, write now?

The Bottom Line: When you start doing whatever you need to do, whenever you need to do it, you’ll start writing life’s wrongs and begin rewriting your place in history.
