Power Up Passages

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

May 12, 2004.

“Some men give up their designs when they have ALMOST reached the goal; while others, on the contrary, obtain a victory by exerting, at the last moment, more vigorous efforts than ever before.”

How many times have you almost made something happen? I’m talking about all those occasions when you almost scaled the summit, almost made it to the top, almost made the grade, getting close enough to almost reach out and touch your goals — but didn’t. I’m willing to bet it’s been a whole bunch of times, right?

You were all but there, having almost made it to the top. Close, yes; but no cigar. And you were so close to making your dreams come true that you could almost sniff the sweet smell of success. Close, sure; but you couldn’t quite seal the deal, could you? You were within a whisker taking your rightful place in life’s winner’s circle, but unfortunately they don’t hand out ribbons for almost winning the race.

“A person can stand almost anything except a succession of ordinary days.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Close, not quite, almost; talk about a group of heartbreaking, gut-wrenching words. Getting a-l-m-o-s-t there and then suddenly, without any sort of warning, having the rug pulled out from under your feet can oftentimes send you spiraling right back down to the bottom of the heap. And hitting bottom when one has almost made the grade can rip an ordinary person’s self-confidence to shreds.

After all, how did it feel when you were ever so close to bringing your dreams to life only to fall short? In all likelihood, disappointment probably doesn’t come close to capturing the lower than low, doom and gloom dejection you felt when you were almost there, when you almost did it — but didn’t. Then, as if hitting bottom wasn’t bad enough, you were now faced with the almost overwhelming prospect of having to start all over again; your goals seemingly further away than ever before.

“An invincible determination can accomplish almost anything and in this lies the great distinction between great men and little men.”
Thomas Fuller

Despondent and heart broken, having gotten oh so close, it almost feels as if all that effort and energy you expended has been seemingly washed down the drain. But it is at these most debilitating, devastating, almost unbearable moments that the real players are separated from the pretenders.

The pretenders, their will having been dealt one last staggering blow, call it quits and head for the house; abandoning their dreams once and for all. While they will still on occasion dream of great achievements, they no longer really believe they can attain them. The real players, on the other hand, immediately get off the deck and resume their relentless, resolute pursuit of excellence with even more fire, fortitude and focus than ever before.

“Take the course opposite to custom and you will almost always do well.”
Jean Jacques Rousseau

Winners cannot be beaten because they won’t be beaten. Getting almost there, even when they are dealt a heart wrenching setback, just seems to whet their appetite. They see almost as little more than just another step on the ladder to success. Rather than allowing that bitter taste of defeat to linger in their mouth, they get up, get better and get going once again. And so must you if you aspire to something much higher an average or run-of-the mill lifestyle.

If you truly want more out of life than you’re presently getting (and you do!), you’ve got to be willing to give more than you’re presently giving (and you can!). And that means you must stop using that old excuse “I’m doing the best I can” as a crutch. As Winston Churchill once cautioned us, “It is no use in saying, ‘we are doing our best.’ You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary.” Amen to that.

Whenever life deals you a terrific blow, especially when you have just about made it over the top but still haven't quite finished the job, don’t give in to the temptation to give up or give in. And when others around you have let go of the rope, you need to grip it tighter than ever and immediately begin climbing right back up the rope once again.

When you are willing to rebound from any and all setbacks and do whatever it takes to make your dreams come true, RIGHT THEN AND RIGHT THERE, you’ll never have to worry about almost getting there ever again.

The Bottom Line: Never settle for anything less than the very best life has to offer.
