Power Up Passages

Finishing Kick.

Brought to you by
The Power Performance Program ©

February 11, 2004.

“For every finish-line tape a runner breaks — complete with the cheers of the crowd and the clicking of hundreds of cameras — there are the hours of hard and often lonely work that rarely gets talked about.”
Grete Waitz

Are you a finisher, the special kind of person who gets in there and gets the job done or are you just another in a long line of people who can never seem to finish what you start? Hey, let’s face it; it’s not easy being a finisher. After all, most folks discover that just getting started is hard enough all by itself. But a person who persistently lacks the self-motivation to start is already finished — end of the story. Yet the ability to consistently stick with a project and see it all the way through to completion is another story altogether; a story that fewer and fewer of us are getting to live.

The tendency to leave a string of things left undone or unfinished is one self defeating habit we must conquer if we’re ever going to stake our rightful place at the top. True champions are renowned for keeping their nose glued to the grindstone, excitedly and energetically working toward the attainment of their next goal or objective. They can hardly wait to once again feel the exhilaration that words can scarcely describe that comes with victoriously crossing that finish line. Putting things off or letting things sit is just not part of their award winning game plan. In fact, the closer they get to the tape, the harder they charge. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can prevent them from pushing right past that finish line.

“Nobody remembers who finished second but the guy who finished second.”
Bobby Unser

Not quite sure whether you’re a finisher or not? OK, here’s a quick test that can help you determine if you are a finisher or a drag-your-feet dawdler instead. Ready? Then here goes. Let’s say it’s about ten minutes to five on Friday afternoon and you’re about two good hours from completing a project that you’ve been working on all week. As the crowd around you packs it in and gets ready to head for the house, do you roll up your sleeves and start applying the finishing touches or do you file out with the rest of the pack?

Do you buckle in to that ever alluring temptation to quit; letting the project sit until later or do you buckle down and finish what you’ve started? Sure, it’s a hard-hitting question, but then again, life has been known to hit hard on occasion as well. No one ever said the trip to the top is a festive parade down easy street.

“There are two kinds of people, those who finish what they start… and so on.”
Robert Byrne

Now I’m sure some of you probably feel like the test above comes off a little too rough. After all, if you are like most people, you are more than ready to get your weekend in full swing on Friday afternoon. And maybe it seems like staying behind and doing more than the others who are walking out the door goes well beyond the call of duty. In fact, you might even convince yourself that letting go you’re so close to finishing is no big deal. But it is a big deal and here’s why.

Ask any employer and he or she will quickly tell you that finding a finisher; that unique type of individual who keeps on keeping on until the job is complete, is like discovering a beautiful oasis amid a sea of arid desert sand. It’s an increasingly rare breed of cat that can hunker down and redouble the effort when everyone else is ready to toss in the towel. There is no doubt about it; people who regularly do whatever is required, whenever it is needed, are the power players who are always in demand. ALWAYS! These champions are the winners who finish the job first — and as a result, they consistently finish in first place.

“There is nothing so fatal to character as half finished tasks.”
David Lloyd George

If you flunked the test above, opting to give up when the finish line was oh so close, don’t despair. In reality, very few people choose to go the distance when given the choice to let go and unwind instead. A quick glance will reveal a landscape literally littered with half finished tasks, principally because half baked attempts and half hearted efforts are the name of the game nowadays. Finding a way out of doing something seems to have replaced finding a way to the finish line. Which can be very good news for you, if you’re ready to toe the line and become a finisher.

If you truly desire to rise above the rank and file and uncover the pathway to unparalleled success, you need to begin finishing whatever you start — from start to finish. Instead of wasting time stopping and starting, stopping and starting again, you can start bringing an all out effort the fray; a gritty finishing kick that kicks into gear as you near the completion of any task.

Why in the world would you ever want to stop or even slow down as you get closer and closer to that finish line? By finishing each and every task you undertake, you can start making your life even more fabulous than you’ve ever imagined. By becoming a finisher, you’ll quickly shine and stand out like the proverbial diamond in the rough; a finished diamond, quite naturally.

The Bottom Line: When you start finishing whatever you start, you’ll start having the time of your life.
