Power Up Passages

Uncommon Denominator.

January 30, 2004.

“Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way.”
Booker T. Washington

Have you ever visited a restaurant or retail store and received exceptionally great service? Now I’m not talking about just OK or even better than average service, but truly outstanding service from start to finish? I’m sure you have, but I bet it surprised you a bit, didn’t it? If you are like most of us, anytime and anyplace you are the recipient of extraordinary service nowadays, you sit up and take notice — and notice BIG TIME!

Whenever someone works overtime to help you out, going far beyond the usual call of duty, you really appreciate their commitment to quality, don’t you? After all, their exceptional attention to detail makes you feel like they care and makes you feel like more than just another face lost in the crowd. And that added touch of excellence they lavishly shower upon you is like frosting on the cake.

And while interacting with quality conscious people can really add a ray of sunshine to your day, the main reason you notice the little ‘extra’ in everything they do is simple: excellence is not all that common anymore. Have you ever stopped for a moment and wondered why that’s the case?

“Put the uncommon effort into the common task... make it large by doing it in a great way.”
Orison Swett Marden

In a world seemingly dominated by people looking for the easy way out of just about everything they do, the little extra that separates the best from all of the rest has somehow got lost in the shuffle. And while it’s somewhat troubling that few people place much emphasis on doing the best they can each and every time out, it also opens a huge window of opportunity for those willing to consistently put forth a little more effort than everyone else.

There is never a shortage of people willing to let someone else do the heavy lifting. Doing as little as possible — or less — seems to be the name of their lazy game. Predictably, the moment the going gets a little tough; this group exits stage right and gets lost. Then there are others who are willing to give it a shot every now and again. But just like the do nothing contingent, anything requiring much more than an average effort is just not in the cards. That pretty much leaves the door wide open for anyone who is willing to put an uncommon effort into everything they say, think or do.

“When you can do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.”
George Washington Carver

Do you have what it takes to pry open that door and step right up and make a name for yourself? Of course you do. But are you willing to step out of the shadows of fear or laziness that have held you back or held you down in the past and start autographing everything you touch with the unmistakable mark of excellence?

Hey, it doesn’t require any more effort to give life your best shot than it does to head for the hills and run for cover. Let’s face it, either way; you have to do something, even if that something is avoiding doing anything at all. And since you’re going to be doing something, why not set the world on fire by making extraordinary effort your common way of doing everything?

“The uncommon man is merely the common man thinking and dreaming of success in larger terms and in more fruitful areas.”
Melvin Powers

Giving anything less than your best is hardly worth the second rate effort expended, is it? After all, how far has a half hearted crack at this or half baked stab at that ever gotten you? And besides, isn’t your time on earth far too precious a gift to simply squander away? Wouldn’t you much rather make your life everything you have ever dreamed it could be by taking an uncommon approach to living?

Instead of looking to do as little as possible, why not set out to do more than people expect and then do a little more? You’re going to surprise them and wow them with your not so common commitment to excellence. And rather than taking a back seat with the rest of the run of the mill throng, where average and ordinary are plenty good enough, why not empower everyone you are privileged to meet with an uncommon approach — a power packed, enthusiastic attitude that energizes everyone that crosses your path. By constantly providing that unmistakable touch of the extraordinary — a never ceasing quest to be your best — you’ll bring out the best in those around you as well.

The Bottom Line: Uncommon effort = uncommon results.
